Wtf is this ?
Wtf is this ?
it's like crossfit but they accidentally added in enough running so it's actually more of a running event than a strength event and if develops enough to have real prize payouts, the meatheads are going to get phased out by subelite runners/triathletes crossing over...especially once the PED testing gets ramped up.
15:00 5k runers with some decent strength would be elite at hyrox after a year of streth work.
But hard core crossfitters/lifters will not be that competitive after a year of aerobic work...they are just too far behind and cary too much weight.
I'm not sure of what the target was when they created the event but it seems like it came from the cross fit world but is maybe better suited to a different type of athlete than they intended.
interestingly enough, a lot of the running advice they give is kinda Norwegian singles method. pretty much all "zone 2" and "threshold" and nothing else.
I would have expected more tabata sprints and V02 to the Maaaaaaxxx! evry day based on the crossfitter mentality but i think the timing of when Hyrox emerges just coincided with the mainstream popularization of the norwegian system.
It's just crossfit's kid brother.
It’s more endurance focused than CrossFit and I think it’s entirely indoors. Basically circuit training made into a competition. One of the best at it is a guy named Hunter McIntyre. He’s actually a decent distance runner especially when you consider he’s 200+ pounds.
Its for people who want to cosplay swimmers out of a pool. A chance to show your thicc swim body wearing nothing but a jammer.
They'd suck at swimming though.
Sounds like a professional Aussie Rules football player would dominate Hydrox.

No he's not a "decent" distance runner... He's not a good runner at all. He's fast for someone who is heavy, but he's not even remotely fast.
Like crossfit, but the participants aren't quite as ugly.
In hyrox competitions you don't have any skill/gymnastics moments like hand stand that you have in crossfit competitions.
Missing a "d" but just like an Oreo.
As someone who has done both
Hyrox is definately more suited towards a strong runner.
There is more running and the other activities are much more doable and trainable along with a running routine. Not quite but some of the activities can be seen as Gym Workouts for a runner.
Where Crossfit the activities are all over the place and I always felt I was going to injure myself prepping for them.
Lastly and I could be wrong on this as only done a 1 Hyrox event and 2 Crossfit events
But I think the Hyrox events are more standard across competitions and are fully known long in advance. Where Crossfit every time it's totally different events and they normally leave a couple of "hidden" events till just before the competition.
So definately place for both but would definately not be surprised if more runners start to do Hyrox every now and then as a form of X-Traning rather than crossfit
I'm sure this has been well covered on this board, but it's hard to overstate how bad even the best Crossfitters are at running. I once accidentally ran onto a Crossfit games course when it spilled onto a bike path in my town. I passed a group of bros who were working really hard to go really slow. I realized the course was active, so I popped off to the side to watch. Yikes. The guys were big and really fit, but aerobically, seemed to struggle. To be fair, this was in the middle of the games, but the "fittest on earth" can't jog a couple miles when they are tired? I can see why there's a space for an event that emphasizes more aerobic fitness.

They are no doubt "fit", probably even have a decent VO2 possibly. But their FTP lets say, is shiite. They are working their fast twitch a lot.
So would Ryan Hall be competitive?
I always wished he had just started training like an 800 runner and raced the mile or 5K rather than retire... would love to see him make some kind of come back even if it were Hydrox. Definitely not the enhanced games though.
Former professional field hockey player and friend wanted a competition that combined some aspects of gym workouts and strava. They were bored with just lifting weights and going for runs. Somehow out of that was born "hybrid rockstar" aka hyrox competitions.
It seems far healthier and legitimately better for someone's fitness than crossfit. I'll make fun of the name, but not the activity (especially compared to crossfit).
The organizers want hyrox in the olympics eventually. I don't know if it will happen, but is definitely possible due to the clear structured format. Crossfit will never be in the olympics.

You know what other former elite runner with a ripped upper body comes to mind?
WEBB IS GONNA BE BACK, BABY!
I bet if you got a bunch of 800m/XC athletes to train for hyrox they would crush.
Unrelated, but autocorrect keeps changing "hyrox" to "gyro" and now I'm hungry lol

Ya I think my initial reaction to Hyrox would be a lot different if I wasn't already tainted with years of crossfit slop and the like
