Seriously. Are Distance Runners just too nice? A lot of trash talk could boost public interest in the sport. Distance Running lacks some serious theater.

majority of distance guys are introverts
you have to be if you want to go on some 20 mile long run
They have brains.
Distance running is humbling. In order to run long and fast, one must suffer. The ego does not like to suffer, hence it recedes as the suffering continues.
i guess there's more of a healthy respect- we know how hard it is/was to stay/get to that high place of fitness, and trash talking just has no place there. unlike jeremy wariner and the sprint corps, we just can't go out and eat fast food whenever we want. unless we want to suck. And also we have to cover a longer distance so there's less certainty, usually everyone is vulnerable at some point in the race. and most distance runners i know are superstitious about things so maybe no one wants bad karma!
It's much easier to win by dumb luck in sprinting.

True. Also when you're in a distance race you suffer for an extended period of time while running next to your competitor. You rely on each other to bring you to faster times during the race over an extended period. A sprint is over in seconds and although you also rely on others to get you faster you are trying to destroy them. It's like a boxing match. You're not trying to use their energy when you're tired to bring you along. They are two completely different sports. I don't think it has a lot to do with the athletes themselves.
Wow this is a funny thread.
Distance runners too nice?
Just let them line up under their screen names and see what trash comes out.
lets here some input from some sprinters. what do you guys think?
I think it may be to do with personality types. Like someone else said, people who are attracted to and do well in distance running tend to be more introverted. With sprinting, maybe trash talk comes into it more because the margin of winning is much smaller (and the races tend to be more unpredictable, as someone can be in the best form of their life and still be beaten). Distance runners just seem quieter, even on teenage teams.
Sprinting is a more 'get pumped for 10 seconds of explosion' type of mindset. It probably bleeds into their behaviors. Distance running is mentally different.
I don’t know how unpredictable sprinting is. Powell and Gatlin are both undefeated this year.
You have to pace yourself with distance running. It’s hard to say “I’m going to kick your ass” and then go out easy.
When you sprint, you are immediately all out for the line.
Dave Bedford did to some degree.
DeMar was known to pop people in the kisser.
Pre had a mouth now and then.
Geez...what more to do you want?

Was at my son's meet a couple months ago and some jackass is making a lot of noise before the first heat of the 100m about how he's going to smoke everyone, blah blah blah. Well, he wins his heat (putting the number one finger in the air as he crosses the line of course) and starts hurling primordial screams towards a rival school's tent at the end. Later on he finished dead last in the finals with three runners from the rival finished ahead of him.
Kid should know the comp before shooting his mouth off.
new to the board? Welcome...
I just think of how whenever a top sprinter breaks or ties a world record, their rival or someone else talks about how he can run ___ much faster (i.e., Gatlin and Powell). You just don't seem to hear that as much from distance runners. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with how sprinters handle themselves (as long as they are respectful); the sprinter mentality is just unique in its own way.
You are all pussies. Distance runners around here trash talk all the time. What is the point of competing if your just gonna be friendly with everyone. That is why our damn distance program in the U.S. sucks so bad. Cause everyone out there is a pussy. Grow some nuts, and start knowing you are going to win, instead of guessing.

Yeah, but only from behind the safety of their keyboards and anonymously. Hell, you're the pussy. If I could reach your head I'd knock you one upside it just for being you, punko. And I'll say it to your face and insult your mother too.
I think Noakes had a theory about this. Most world class distance runners tend to be nice as well as humble. Glory for distance runners is largely nonpublic, and the real gift is pretty much totally private. They know that their time on top is short, not more than a couple of good summers.

Too nice? Have you read any threads on here lately?
