Its a business. When you have a monopoly on a commodity - in this case track - you get to set the prices. Unless the Flagstaff community or another operator builds another track and hosts meets, Flagstaff runners will pay the NAU prices for indoor track, meets, etc.
Seems like runners could park off campus and jog to the track - so that is one expense gone. As for the indoor track prices? Well, you moved to a ski town - if you can't train outdoors, you'll have to put up with it.
I feel you on the meet price though. That could be comprable to a road race, maybe even more than low key road races.
I'm shocked that anyone is allowed to use the indoor or outdoor tracks at all. Just about every university I've ever lived near has only allowed access to athletes.

Colorado is much worse, with no access at all to the indoor or outdoor track. that's why non professional elite runners are barely going there anymore. colorado running is for pros and rich people only

Was just going to say the same thing. Universities don't typically let the public use their athletic facilities at all, especially an indoor track.

Same "community" that pooped all over the high school track that everyone goes to for workouts at lower altitude.
the only people they kicked off the track was McKirdy because one of their runners would record everything, including the NAU athletes. Cornfield asked him nicely to stop recording and he refused so they got kicked off the track. when McKirdy found out he kicked the runner off the team and things are back to normal.
last month when it snowed I went to the Dome and NAU, NAZ Elite, Nikki Hiltz, and Mission Dark Sky were all using the track at the same time. Cornfield seems very accommodating.
Cornfield probably has some say but at the few places I worked at, the department made it almost impossible for anyone to use the track.
1. They had to have insurance
2. had to book it by the hour
3. If there were more than 8 people an athletic trainer had to be involved.
They would even make us “rent” other teams facilities from the athletic department. If I sent a group of injured kids to the pool, we had a by the hour rate removed from our budget!!
So to sum it up, NAU probably can’t help everyone out. Also the dome is always chaos with all of the sports that use it

Another high altitude University is headed this way as well: University of Wyoming. Berryhill (and frankly, the university itself) are not interested in the community whatsoever. The University constantly sues the city and does things to undermine the community.
Why are runners such absolute b1tches? Seriously, that rant is pathetic. What are YOU doing for NAU track that should entitle you to wear out their facility at no cost to you? They don't HAVE to let you on their facility despite it being a public university. Getting on letsrun and reading so many of these threads makes me believe distance runners are some of the most entitled people. Go talk to Cornfield. Get to know him. Do something for the program. He may just let you onto his facility. Maybe he won't but instead of being a leach, maybe do something for someone else instead of just expecting them to do something for you.

Also... anyone ever tried to walk in and use a university laboratory or other expensive facility when not a student or employee? Yeah, good luck getting away with that.
