What do you think about Rupp's performance? I will say it's not bad from someone almost at his 40 already, but if he wants to make the LA 2028 team, he has a really rough road ahead of him. Five other Americans just dip under the 60-minute barrier in the same race, two of them even laugh at Ryan Hall's old American Record.
I actually was impressed. I've considered him washed up for a while, so seemed like a credible effort. Making the 2028 Oly Team is a long shot, but we already knew that.

No doubt it would have been much better for him to be in the 60:30-61:30 range with this one, but we gotta remember the full marathon is hell of a lot different than the half. Not just because it’s twice the distance. 5k vs 10k Is a lot closer in energy systems than the 10k and half and even a wider gap between half and full. It’s a mental battle too and a race where you have to be patient and healthy. Half those guys ahead of him in Houston may not even be healthy for the marathon trials it happens. But Rupp has some work to do. He’s not too old to run faster but he needs to run another half or two before the trials. I really wish he would get some work at 5k/10k before his next half
I mean, it was about what I expected out of him. It didn't impress too much, but it wasn't like it was some horrible affair either. This is what we have seen from his last few races and unless he runs something really remarkable, (which I personally do not expect--but maybe he will surprise us) he is not a contender in the pro scene anymore.
Honestly, I think it's a great effort. Galen is ironically playing the long game right now, to make the 2028 team. I could easily see him storming from behind to take the third spot at the trials.
Zero chance. The Moroccan guy who won the Houston has one spot reserved so only 2 spots left. Rupp was invincible even was it 5 years ago at the marathon trial but you can't do much about aging.

If Rupp can still run a 62:01 then he can probably run a sub 4 mile too. He should go do that.
It's a myth that endurance lasts longer than speed. The opposite is generally true. He'll have to train for it of course but a sub 4 would be more significant than mucking around in road races he's never gonna win.

We would need to know a lot more about how his training went over the past 24 months. I think he might still get able to get into 61 low/2:08 shape. These days that might not be enough. But between injuries and bad days it might get you close if you have a great day at the trials ..

you would make a great coach for him. you seem to know a lot.
I think the media like the Abdi comparison. And I think, if you're in Galen's corner, that's a solid way to motivate yourself.
But I just think, 2020 and 2024 were uniquely weak years for US marathoning in terms of the depth of the field. And even arguably 2016.
Historically the third spot, and in the 2020 trials even the second spot, was just anyone's game because the 2nd and 3rd best US marathoners were so far off the 1st and 2nd best, and at times even just flatly off the standard set by the rest of the world.
It feels like a dam is breaking. Before 2025, 3 men had gone under 60 in the marathon. Now 9 have. And that doesn't include names like Habtom Samuel and Zouhair Talbi. I think the 2028 field is going to be the most competitive US field in decades.
Any one runner could have a bad day, or be injured. Mantz can have a bad day, Samuel can have a bad day Talbi can have a bad day, Maier can have a bad day, Hicks can have a bad day, Klecker can have a bad day, Young can have a bad day, Biya can have a bad day, Kiptoo can have a bad day, Ryan Ford can have a bad day. But for all of them to have a bad day all at the same time is just asking for a lot.
1:02-flat @ age 39 is impressive any way you slice it up. I would stop short at any thoughts on him trying to make a team or whatever. Dude just loves running. He'll line up for the trials and run 2:09-2:12. If that makes the team then good on him & maybe bad for American distance running.

Discus.
I like that he is still racing. One positive aspect of the old, 1980's/90's road race scene was runners "sticking around" racing and then mixing with the regular people after the race.
I think that helped with the popularity of the sport back then. And yes, all you younguns out there, running WAS popular, 10K races WERE on TV, the major networks and ESPN, people DID watch.

At his best he was only running around 60 flat for a half. And at his best he was running 2:06. He can still probably run 2:09, maybe a 2:08. But that's not going to get the job done to make another team. If the trials were on a fast course you'll need at least a 2:07 to make the team. This is because we've already got several guys who have run sub 2:08 in the last couple years, but put all the 2:08 and 2:09 guys on pace to run 2:07 high and adrenaline of top 3, they're going to push through. It's going to be a deep race at the 2028 trials. If they just choose a place that won't be 70+ degrees and mountainous terrain it's going to be a very fast day.

Why stop there? Might as well name a few others who could have a bad day
Jones could have a bad day, Grandma Jean could have a bad day, neighbor Frank could have a bad day, Pastor Edmonds could have a bad day.
