The deceased who has been identified as Weldon Kerich, is the younger brother to the 2010 Boston marathoner Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot, an athlete from Bomet County and a member of Jubilee Camp, was in the midst of his daily training routine alongside teammates, sharpening his form and endurance in preparation for upcoming international competitions scheduled to take place in China in February, when he suddenly collapsed.
Eyewitnesses say efforts were made to assist him, but he was unresponsive, and he was later pronounced dead.
“As we were going uphill in one of our normal training route’s, we realized Weldon was struggling and breathing heavily, we asked him to have a rest but he refused saying he’s ok and we proceeded,” narrated Monica Jeptoo, one of the athletes....
It is reported that after covering around 100 metres ahead, Weldon collapsed.
“We had covered around 100 metres ahead where Weldon fell and started kicking and he had difficulty in breathing, we tried to call for help but it was too late, Weldon was later pronounced dead at a facility in Kapsabet town,” Monica added.
Kerich, 30, had pbs ofr 3:48 for 1500/14:18 for 5000/65:34 for the half according to tilastapaja and WA.
