Better conditioning and relatively lower heart rate lead to less sweating. Or maybe they're just sandbagging it.
Have you been to a game? Stadiums are way colder now. I remember it feeling super hot in the olden days, now Air conditioning is more efficient and NBA has more money.
Gone are the days of it being 80 degrees in an arena for a June playoff game.
It's definitely the stadium temperatures now. Back in the 80's, Boston used to crank up the heat on purpose. I think during some NBA finals games it was north of 100 degrees inside the old Garden. Nobody does that anymore.
Players are running way more than they did in the 90's. The game is much faster and more spread out, and that's why there is so many injuries. Saying they aren't sweating as much because they aren't trying is stupid.
I'm sure there are multiple reasons. I agree cooler indoor conditions plays a role, but I just went to an NBA game and they call fouls on everything. That means that the game is stopped and you don't see as much back and forth play up and down the court.

Just my observation...
This is a myth. There a fewer fouls called per game in the 2020s vs. "the old days".
Media timeouts extend game an hour longer than 50yrs ago. Players get pumped full of electrolytes/hydration. Lots of rest breaks. Better air conditioning.

In the days of Russell and Chamberlain, arenas were much smaller, smoking was encouraged and the fans were right in the players faces!
Do you think jogging down the court, maybe one pass, and jacking up a three is going to work up a sweat. High offensively and defensively. I watched the Sixers the other day a seven two center stand at the three line the entire game. Back in the day he would be banging down low. The game just isn’t the physical challenge it once was.
