Sarah Lorge Butler has a great interview with LetsRun’s very own Jon Gault on the Fast People podcast. She asked him about his approach to ethical standards as a journalist, what he thinks of content creators vs. journalists, the GST debacle, the LetsRun message board, and whether he has ever considered leaving LetsRun and striking out on his own. It’s really worth a listen.

Sarah Lorge Butler talks to LetsRun's Jonathan Gault about his background, track & field media, mixed zone etiquette, LetsRun's often toxic message boards, and his recent reporting on Citius Mag. Jonathan Gault on X:
Good conversation. They went over the mixed zone, which is probably the most unique part of runnings coverage maybe. Does any other sport have an open forum like this just 5 minutes after a race? In my experience most athletes handle it remarkably well.

NFL and NBA coaches and players hold press conferences shortly after a game ends. (In the NFL, a head coach’s postgame press conference typically begins 10-20 minutes after the end of the game. Player pressers follow.)
i didn't think it was a great conversation. in fact, not a conversation at all. it was a formal list of questions and follow ups were weak. but always interested to hear anything JG has to say, so worth the 30 minutes.
not trashing. just how it came off to me. but i'll reiterate that it was 100% worth the listen.
Sarah Lorge Butler is always prepared with great questions. Her communication style is very chill, open and inviting, which is why people seem to enjoy telling their stories to her. I'm sure Gault would agree. I learned quite a bit from this interview. Both the interviewer and interviewee are class acts, in my opinion.
Also enjoyed it! It was recorded the day after Christmas so I give Jon and Sarah a little slack. I thought it was insightful and a nice peice at a time of year when a lot of shows are doing repeats or year end compilation or taking a few weeks off. Jon also admits to being a hobby jogger so there’s that.

Missed a point
It was a great interview. I laughed at his story about how he got started at Letsrun, explaining that Robert wasn't very responsive to Jonathan's initial inquiries. That should surprise no one.
I think if I were in Sarah's position, the one thing I would have addressed was the role JG played in Letsrun's attempt to defend Shelby. I'm sure he would say they just trying to play devil's advocate, but I think the whole thing came across poorly. I would have asked if he would have done anything differently looking back at it.
JG is the heart and soul of Let's Run. He does the grunt work, research, and follow ups. He is the most knowledgeable journalist in T&F. He keeps the other two on topic and calls BS when they (mostly RoJo) rant and drift off topic. No JG - no successful podcast.

Every single sport at the Olympics.
Are you sure? Do gymnasts, swimmers, boxers, wrestlers go through mixed zones or do they get out of their gear etc and have a much longer time until questions (and the medalists are made available mostly). I don’t know honestly but logistically it’s a little different and the celebrity level in the bigger sports are also a factor.

Yes of course. But players get to shower, decompress, and come out more like 30-1hour later for locker room access. Think of how different it is 5 mins from 30 after an emotional outcome. A press conference is a different feel than the mixed zone too.

Well put. RoJo brings some color to the conversation and Gault keeps it grounded and fun. WeJo seems to repeat the comments of others and loves to say things are crazy way too often.

Butler's recent interview with Laurie Henes is interesting as well.

Well Butler wasn't much better about Houlihan's burrito nonsense. And Gault cannot say that he was "just trying to play devil's advocate", as he explicitly stated that he believed Houlihan (based on his bs detector LOL), and not the combined knowledge and expertise of the AIU/WA/WADA/CAS and the many experts. Plus his strange propaganda for the insane ramblings of an anonymous letsrun troll that he recommended to read as an "editorial". Hahahahaha
Ultimately, as many people have suggested, defending Houlihan was a slick business decision by Butler and Gault—both are too experienced and smart to really have fallen for the burrito nonsense.
