I think Holt gets a bit of pull back as in people don't realize how talented he truly is. 20(+) years ago he would literally be in the league of Bob Kennedy/Todd Williams/ Paul McMullen/ and among the best Americans all time. The issue he is literally running unbelievable performance marks but he is doing it at a time in which American distance runners are almost if not the best country consistent with talent World Wide. I will be honest I am not innocent from taking Holt less seriously than his colleagues. I do hope he gets a sub 3:50 and 3:30.this year and also a Sub 1:45. I think his dedication is amongst the best of American Mid/Long athletes.

Lol. Zero chance he breaks 3:50 for the mile in the next two months.
Maybe he'll break 3:50 for a 1500. Maybe.
Only arguably zero chance because it feels unlikely he’ll be let into Millrose. So he has to win Dr. Sander and then run fast at Millrose. Or hope BU has a fast mile with collegians like Langon, Sahlman et al. He can run sub-3:50 in the right race, not too worried about that.

You know it's a good question. 3.50 isn't the barrier it once was and there will be some chances for him (there will definitely be something at BU at least 1-2 times this indoor season).
I think there is no doubt he's in his career window for running PR's. 1.45.05* in 2024 and 3.32.95 last year at US champs - the question is how much longer is it staying open and how close to it closing are we? The only thing I would say with Holt is that he's not exactly Willis or Centro when it comes to his running form and a sub 3.50 is probably right up there maxing out his talent and it won't take a large drop-off before his form inefficiencies hurt him. And I love Eric Holt - such a tough runner, great story - but that's my honest opinion.
Good luck to him though, would love to see it. He would deserve it.

Your point about the competitiveness of American distance running today in comparison to 20+ years ago is a good one, but you need to show more respect to Bob Kennedy. From 1994 to 1997, Kennedy was one of the top ten 5,000m runners in the world. During that timeframe, Kennedy:
had the 3rd fastest time in the world in 1994
finished 7th, 6th, and 6th in global championship 5,000m races from 1995-1997
ran sub-13 when only the very best runners in the world did so; on this day in 1996, Kennedy was the 9th-fastest man in history
I like Holt, and I hope he achieves his goal of breaking 3:50, but he is not on Kennedy's level.
