He often trained with Ron Clarke's group at Caulfield Race Course. I always confused him with Kerry Pearce. It was a great era. RIP.
What kind of workout did they usually do there?
The runs were about an hour long. The track was grass. They'd all start together at a fairly easy pace and then the pace picked up as the run went along. Guys would drop off the pack as the pace got too fast for them. By the later miles Ron was often well under five minute pace and probably on his own. I think he told me that Kerry O'Brien was someone who could stay with him, Ron, until the end or near the end but that Kerry wasn't as regular at those runs as others in the group were.
