Personally I question this. I have a feeling the money is gonna go to an athlete whose family is already well off, but it provides an incentive I suppose.
Edit: the athlete has to be wearing their $260 Mezzofondo spike to be eligible to receive it. Seems yet more cost-prohibitive for those who would benefit the most from this money.

What I like is the claim that this spike delivers 4% more energy return than other leading distance spikes.
According to their website the resiliency of the foam on it's own is 74%. That's not even remotely close to the numbers we see from the foams used by Nike, Puma, Adi, Asics etc in their road and track products. They then have the standard nylon plate with some carbon fiber powder in it (what every brand likes to call a "carbon fiber plate" but isn't really) - I struggle to see how this generates 4% more energy return than other leading brands in a midsole height of probably 15mm.

NIL is not charity.
When a brand chooses a model, they pick on looks rather than socio-economic status.
When a sponsor chooses an athlete, it's usually based on their results; again not their family wealth.
What does appear wrong here is to straight out offer an NIL based on time. That appears to be against the rules.
It might take a while to see this happen. Most of guys in contention to break 4 are already on NILs and won’t be able to participate, leaving the door open for others. Expect surprise runners to win this.
Not sure how to feel about this. On one hand if I was currently an elite high school runner I would be very excited. But on the other and it feels kind of gross to incentive high school kids with money. High school running should be for fun, not for tens of thousands of dollars.

Will other shoe companies follow suit? If a runner is close to 4 minutes, why not wear that spike - the profit is still 39700 or so after taxes. Many pros don't even make that much for running sub 4.

Wait.. I thought NIL money stood for "name, image, and likeness"? I thought being paid for performance was not permitted.
They aren't paying for performance. The are offering a NIL to someone who has reached a performance standard. The money isn't for running a 4 min mile. It is for being a 4 min miler who is willing to endorse their brand..

The post wasn't worded that way.
"The first boy to break 4:00....will be earn..."
The lawyers would need to parse out the actual contract, but as it's stated, it would break eligibility rules.
