It's the first time since 1978 that both American record holders will both be in Boston.

I get why Sisson chooses Boston ($$$), but she has not shown herself to be her best on hilly courses, shame we don't get to see her attempt something fast at say London.

He recently confirmed on strava it was a stress fracture.
Mantz is fantastic but honestly I would rather see him lineup at London versus Boston. Boston, of course, probably threw a ton of money at him as he is the top American and it is the top American marathon...but I'd still love to see what he could do at London
I guess you have to take 100k when Boston offers you, but if Mr. Mantz ran a fast paced race, we’d all be proud to have the (clean) American record down in the high 2:02’s - low 2:03’s.
just to prove it can be done…

I don’t think that’s fair. She did pretty well at NYC considering she got sick during her taper.

Probably best to take the cash. Is she really going to run faster than 2:18? And London isn't super fast anyway, both Chicago and Valencia seem to be the places to drop big times these days

Yep, he really can’t afford to NOT run Boston and Chicago every year that isn’t an Olympic year. And, it would seem that he could finally be in the chase for a WMM podium.
However, as one of the biggest Mantz fans on here, I truly wish he would forego a spring marathon altogether, especially in the wake of this most recent injury, and just spend the year on the track, on the roads some, maybe chasing shorter distance PRs and getting some speed back before culminating in a fall marathon.
Hard marathons take a massive toll on the body. It is a huge bank withdrawal that frequently results in insufficient funds when proper recovery is neglected. And Mantz, for whatever reason, always comes back too fast. He always needs just another chill week or two before he starts his next build, although I get the short turn required when an important race is only six to seven weeks later.
It is very hard to stay on top in the marathon over many years. There are only so many “going deep to the well” efforts in the body. I think Mantz would be far better served to skip Boston this year and focus on improving his 5000 and 10,000 times while chasing the occasional road race prize money. Then run Chicago or Berlin or New York. Just my $0.02.
