As a specialist, If you can't run faster than a guy who has to train in 3 disciplines, you have no place on the professional scene. That's not a knock on you guys, but that's just the way it is.
You must be a moron. That is like saying if you were a MLB player years ago and you couldn’t hit as well as Bo Jackson, a football player, you need to quit. You would have to be a moron to think this way.

Everyone was terrible back then, not a fair comparison.

You must be stupid. What are you talking about? Explain yourself.

This kind of argument is never ending. You could also say what about all the female pro marathoners who are slower than male amateurs working full time - should they not be pro? What about all the semi professional running YouTubers who are slower than amateur runners - should they reitre from YouTube? Being able to live the life as a pro runner is not only related to running performance otherwise thousands of Africans would be making much more money from the sport. This may not sound fair but it is the same in life where the most competant people at work are not always given the job promotions salary raises etc ...

I don't understand why such a marathoner won't choose another sport instead. If he chooses cross country skiing he can still run almost every day and maybe get on the podium. Cycling or light weight rowing are other options
Yee started out running, so his base for triathlon success was as a runner.
Then he built a large aerobic base from many many hours of endurance paced cycling with occaisonal high intensity intervals. He also ran at max effort for 5-10k in his races for a few years.
I'd simply suggest that was not a detriment to his marathon ambitions but a contribution to why he was able to take that base and then relatively quickly build marathon training with it.

Every MLB pitcher with worse ERA than that DH guy from LA Dodgers should quit pitching in MLB... /s

Yeah, the OP comes across like he doesn’t know what he is talking about. Plus a 2:06 marathon is still really good even if it isn’t enough to win on a fast course these days. According to the OP’s logic, all the thousands of serious runners who are slower than that should just hang ‘em up so we will then have only a select few pros to follow in a low participation sport. That will make the sport boring.

Maybe it's something marathoners can learn from.
Bingo. Who knew that running 150 mpw wasn’t necessary to be “elite” and that cross training might be the missing ingredient for many oft-injured runners who can’t break through? I mean, doesn’t Lukas V still hold the American high school two-mile record, the only kid to ever break 8:30 as a prep?

Lance Armstrong started out as a triathlete - so all the cyclists who can't win 7 Tour de Frances should quit?
