That’s what I’m saying. Great showing for these two, took advantage of others being overconfident and out of shape in order to push into the top 10. Obviously a disappointing place, but gutsy performances.
Chelimo did his usual put his face in the race by taking the lead with a surge around 2k. That showed some confidence. Faded some but still hung tough and ran really well. One would not think that he would do so well on a soft sloppy course with his running form.
This result showed he is strong and fit and it will be interesting to see what he does at the Marathon Project later this month.
Liam Murphy was great (and considering he finished 7th still has a good chance to make the team if someone pulls out) but I think if he ran the 2K he woulda made the team.
Ah yes, Liam Murphy the collegiate 1500m record holder should give up on the 1500m.
Enlighten us some more please.
I stand by what I wrote. He ran 3:33.02 earlier this year. That's the NCAA record, but it was only good enough to rank #10 on the US list this year. Someday he will flourish in the 5000m and I will post a link to this thread and say "see, I told you so."

Remember when Chelimo would take down everyone in the US in the 5k? It's been sad that he hasn't been able to translate his track success to the roads but this could be a turning point.
they didn't make the US team for Worlds, but their performances (7th and 8th place, respectively) were very impressive.
Murphy really should give up on the 1500. He is meant to run the 5000.
Chelimo, just wow. He took down some big names like Drew Hunter and Cooper Teare.
Even if he makes the 5,000 his championship event, why give up on the 1,500 entirely? Mike Smith likes running Nico in 1500s, 3000s, even 800s back in the day. I’d bet he dabbles with Murphy too. The fact that he ran this instead of the 2K where he’d had a great shot for 2nd shows they’re not keeping him in the 1500-only box.

He did not make the ncaa final in the 1500 last year and has never been in the top 10 at ncaas in the mile or 1500.
3:33 does not mean what you think it does when guys like strand, hocker nuguse, garcia romo, hoare etc all showed fitness to be world finalists and / or run 3:30 while in college.

He has to get a lot better period to make a US team. To say that nobody is a late bloomer in the 1500 isn’t accurate (see: Vincent Ciattei). The 5000 has big talent coming up with Hansen, Langon, Wolfe. He’s gotta pick the event he’s better at and he can’t pick the 3000, so it’s unclear what the right answer is yet.

PC is one of the most decorated 5000m runners in US history, but he is 35 now and he will never do much on the roads or anywhere else.

What the heck are you on. Murphy is the NCAA record holder over 1500. Yeah he’s damn good at the 5k, but saying he should automatically ditch it and go up without trying a season or two at the 15 is stupid.

thank you for validating the need for this post. People still think of Liam as a 1500 star where he has never accomplished anything of note except that weak CR. He didn't even make the NCAA finals this year. He had the #10 time in the US this year and the #35 time in the US last year. He has never broken 3:33.
And, sorry, in the super-shoe era 3:33 just isn't that good:
1) Ethan Strand and Gary Martin have both run 3:48, which is much faster than a 3:33. Strand probably was capable of running sub-3:30 earlier this year.
2) Colin Sahlman will likely run 3:30 or faster in spring/summer 2026. The 3:33 record will be forgotten very soon.
Naming ~8 American runners who are definitively better than Liam in the 1500 is easy: Cole Hocker, Yared Nuguse, Ethan Strand, Jonah Koech, Josh Hoey, Hobbs Kessler, Gary Martin, Vincent Ciattei, Nathan Green. Soon we will add Colin Sahlman to that list and maybe in a year or two Cooper Lutkenhaus.
In the 5000, by strong contrast, that list is a lot shorter: Cole Hocker, Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks. I know what you are thinking. You are thinking: "Cooper Teare is a 12:54 guy. Of course he's better than Liam Murphy in the 5000." Well I'm not so sure. Liam destroyed Cooper yesterday. He did it on a tough course in crappy conditions over 10K. If they ran 5K on the track today, Liam would win. It will be interesting to see what happens in six months. I'm putting my money on Liam.
You may also be thinking, "Yesterday was a fluke. Of course Liam isn't a 10K guy!" But yesterday's finish is a mirror image of Liam's stunning top-10 finish in the NCAA cross country in 2024. He is better over 10K cross country than at the 1500. He has not yet mastered the 5K on the track yet, but when he does it is going to be his sweet spot. If not for that weak 1500 CR, all of us would realize it.

Anybody using his 1500 PR/CR as a basis for him being an actual 1500 guy hasn’t been paying attention. It seems his new coach knows this and thats why he was in the 10K and his actual 1500m man teammate, Strand, was in the 2K.
