Henry, I would simply train the way you have in the past, adjusted for your current condition. I know you wont listen to people who say "take it easy"; you dont break world records like that. I've enjoyed reading several good books about Kenyan running and I've learned that its mostly just determination that counts rather than the fine details of any one particular training program. If you ask a thousand runners for advice, you will not get the same advice from any two. "There are many ways to skin a cat" Listen to your body, have patience and as the book's title says: "Train hard, win easy"

Henry, you are fifty years old and have abused your body for years. Smartin up and listen to people that tell you to take it easy on your attempted comeback.
I didn't run for many years, started up again and quickly was doing 2 hours a day like Henry and sometimes more than 3 hours. I'm over 60 now. Henry knows what he's doing.
to w8n4u,
I ran a whole bunch of marathons. OTC and Honolulu in 78, then 10 years later did everything from pittsburg to LA to TC to the 92 trials to vegas. Was Buerskens that blond (Finnish?) woman? I was with her until the kahala mall I think. I was in 2nd until diamond head when Jan Ettle stomped me on the uphill and I finshed third. Just this week I started to put more hills into the mostly flat miles I've been running. Have to keep working on that weakness because I really think it would befun to go run cascade this year and I don't want to suck too badly!
Have to second this opinion. You will find your "sweet spot" where the training feels right. Henry probably has good "muscle memory" which is why he can just jump into running for long distance (albeit , slowly). Also, a big part of coming back is not having mental blocks about just getting out the door and putting in a long run. I coach kids and the begginers can't imagine running for 8 miles, but later , after they have done it, it is not such a big deal. They are used to the idea of it and the next year, coming back, they know they can do it and it is not a problem.
T Runamook,
I'm glad my class start getting they main points:
Skuj
Lmag
Runamook
The above studens are willing to listen and there are heading the right direction.
What is the running loop means?
Can anyone could imagine what could have been the right fomula for Henry Rono use for four events in 81days with free injures? come on students.
Lmag is correct
Skuj have the right idea
Runamook hit the point by the head.
Please understand where I come from
Some of you just come to classroom and you want to kick out a teacher and claim you are correct all-time.instead of asking your self questions first, what leads someone to do this?and why he is doing everyday without getting tired.
Skuj,Lmag and Runamook Do you have a job?
If you ask your self these kinds of question you will break world record very easy. That is why my running was easy and since Ihave gone through once I'm mature. What is wrong with my comeback because you seem to doudt it.
My old coach used to tell me do your thing and let them wonder, and watch you. because we have three people in this earth:the wonder, the watcher and the doer. Is it too much?

To Don't be a wuss,
Can you keep these people to stay focus to the questions
Can these people answer the question Who is the sponsor for Henry Rono?
Or Do they understand what is sponsor means?
Focus on the topic
Henry
Are you referring to a shoe and running gear sponser Henry, or someone to get you into races as Guest speaker and competitor when you are ready? I am more grateful for my own gimpy running when I get on this thread and see the reports. I am learning with John's help to slow down each run and not worry about my speed, base is where it is at when coming back from an injury or long lay off. Today on my hot humid hilly 6 miler I saw a small dead bird on the side of the road, not squashed, just looked like it was peacefully sleeping, I remembered a Bible verse that says "God sees even when the birds of the air fall to the ground and you are much more important than sparrows." I gently picked up the bird and laid it under a bush... it seemed to me like a holy moment where I knew the Lord has His eye on all of us even if we don't think or believe it. Thank you to all you inspiring posters and thank you Henry Rono!

Henry,
Lots of luck! I am cheering for you to be successful! Tinman
Henry,
I think you have two sponsors. One is your mind and the other your body. The combination sponsors your effort and determination.
(I feel like grasshopper in a Kung Fu episode!)
LOL :o)

To Sarah,
Sponsor to me means shoe company.Where you are using their special product like the way WSU/Nike used to sponsor me way back.
Henry
Right, thats what it means to me but I just wanted to make sure. Powerbar has helped me for the past 15yrs if you would like some bars let me know :o)
To 1500Master
You hit the nail right straight through the wall.
A while ago I mention that my sponsor is determining my daily running program. And you are correct and student shouldn't have difficulties understanding my training system. And I how I achieve master one world record very soon.

Here is a poem from D.H. Lawrence
"I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself."
- D.H.Lawrence (1885~1930)
I'm marveling how things look different how we react to things when we are out doing something we like doing best.
Reading what you wrote suddenly brought back a memory when as a 13 yr. old my brother & myself came upon this dead cat lying by a fence, obviously was hit by a car. The feeling that somehow this cat didn't look real!

runamook,
Yes, Buerskens won 2 or 3 years in a row. I thought you had her the year you ran. Believe me, you stomped a lot of other runners that year. Your other note said you only ran 2 marathons.
Henry, sorry to insert this note to runamook. Best of luck. I'm enjoying hearing about your comeback.
Henry, I have several jobs!
I coach High school track and cross country, teach kids gymnastics, do bookeeping for my husbands business and I'm also a mom! I'm lucky because my schedule is very flexible and I can find time to run..now, it is so nice and sunny out, it's time to do some work in the garden. The raspberries and strawberries are calling!
w8n4u,
that was only 2 marathons that took me 3 hours! all the rest were in the 2:40-2:50 range and they all felt soooo much easier! :)
To Sarah.
I'm now thinking like young man asking my coach/shoe sponsor, when am I going to get a comfortable shoe for these minutes input everyday/week running like a mad-man.My coach/massues told me this morning while massaging my entire body, he notice achiles and quads are swollen because bounding on the long road of Trammway every morning.
"You need coushing shoe for the road, it doesn't matter what shoe you wear for mountains because you are on the sands" said coach.
The 20 day run this morning section completed with 110 minutes and that was answer for the question one.It seems like Patti does not want to answer my question only to come in and he wants me to listen to him.You can answer the rest if want.
henry
To Runamook,
You are doing a good job,you no room for other things, so you are well focus. You seem you understand my point
Stay that way you right on it.
