Someone remind me if I have a kid who is a superstarathlete to not live stream it. That was almost as cringe as Lebron's announcement but not as bad as he didn't devastate a hometown on live tv.
Jesus, the egotism of doing something like that live.
Congrats to Quincy on making his decision! I thought USC would be a great choice purely from a track standpoint (co-national champions, good training weather all year, training under Quincy Watts, and living in the city hosting the 2028 Olympics), but I figured it would be challenging for him to be so far away from his family. Advantage Maryland.
Seems like a strange choice. Any chance his high school coach comes as a package deal or something?
Not sure why Andrew Valmon would need a high school assistant coach. I think he'll do just fine. However, I've known how some hs coaches wont let go of their golden goose as well. Wouldn't wish that on Andrew or anyone else.

Didn’t know Maryland’s 400 coach had such a storied history. Was strictly judging off recent results.

Andrew Valmon has been at Maryland for like, 20 years. Sure he has basically zero dollars to work with, but note:
Kameron Jones went from 1:49 800m at Maryland to 1:45 at Clemson
Caleb Dean went from 50.x 400mH at Maryland to NCAA Champ 47.x at Texas Tech, NCAA Champ 60mH 7.5, Big 12 Champ 60m 6.5 ......
Quincy will be fine but lets not pretend Valmon is a genius
Uhh..I would assume Valmon would be gone to make space for the new head coach from Bullis. I mean, it’s not like Valmon has produced results and the coach from Bullis has
Yeah, the era of all these great hs coaches that had a superstar, then took over a college track program has been a great ROI of late. Always works out. It's also true that some coaches are hired by name/athletic achievement only so Im not naive to that either. Valmon is a product of a great Seton Hall coach. You have to have talent to score well at the ncaa championship level. I can think of about 250 other universities that have not produced champions but that doesn't mean they are bad coaches. They just dont have the talent that ends to end up in about 10 consistently good programs and that might be an overstatement. Besides, my vote was for him to work with Watts at USC.
I will be fair and say that Bullis's coach is not necessarily a genius either.
A lot of people not from the area aren't aware that Bullis is a private school that literally costs ~60k a year... That's more than an OUT OF STATE kid would be paying at UMD.
IE the value of a Bullis scholarship is monetarily worth far more than a UMD scholarship, and Bullis can give as many as they want out, while UMD is broke for a P4 and would be limited even if they did have infinite money.
It DOES indeed come as a surprise, as if anyone's being honest - we all thought this was merely a consolation for the final school candidacies simply because of paying homage to his locale.
However, the thought did echo in the back of my mind - what if he chooses an upset simply for wanting to continue being coaches by Joe Lee?
It looks like this probably played a huge role. There's no way I see a sh*t program like Maryland to have their hands on Quincy and his training. No way. Joe Lee will continue to guide him or even write his programming for him.
On top of that, he's for SURE securing a bag. Maryland I'm sure went all in. He's either gonna get to continue with his New Balance NIL -or- UnderArmour is throwing the house at him. Which would make sense since it's a Baltimore based brand.
Either way when you look at this, from a financial and coaching standpoint - it makes sense.

The state of Maryland is not exactly a sprint powerhouse—not like Texas or Florida. Yet Joe Lee put together a high school 4*400m team that ran 3:06. That’s not just recruiting…there are few runners to recruit in Maryland at that level.
In addition to wondering about the coach, I wonder what other 400m runners will come out of the woodwork to commit to Maryland? The whole setup strikes me as something more out of the LeBron playbook than your typical high school recruiting process.

That is the rumor I heard. Quincy gets an enormous NIL package and is coached by his HS coach. The chancellor of UofM paid a home visit, so I believe it.
Either way, this is amazing for their track program. Every single top 400m runner in HS and many in the NCAA just called the head coach for a roster spot next year.
It’s interesting because several years ago he would have forgone college to “go pro”, but now with the NIL deals he’ll actually get more exposure running in college and get a degree and get $ from the NIL deal
