It's only Jane's 3rd race of the season. There is no way she is close to being cooked. She's going to taper and blow the doors off everything at nationals. The scary thing is her reserved "not all out" effort today is still good enough to beat anyone in the NCAA right now. I think when we see her truly go "all out" next week, it's going to be something really special to witness.
I was at the race. Hedengren looked smooth and nearly effortless in her form the entire race. The course was three 2K loops so plenty of opportunities to see all the runners up close and throughout the race. On the last straight away Kosgei looked gassed. No way Kosgei was “taking it easy.” I’m sure Hedengren ran as hard as Diljeet Taylor coached her to run. “Par for the course” so far for Hedengren in her three cross country meets this season was crushing the field by 30-50 seconds and setting course records each time.

It only takes one overly exerted prelim to hurt someone's performance in a final. Seen it so many times.

To add to this, Sadie Engelhardt has run four cross country races this season. She also ran two events at New Balance Nationals (800m and mile) on June 22, the 1500 @ Sound Running Sunset Tour on July 12, and 800m and 1500m @ the Stumptown Twilight on July 19, the 1500m @ USATFs on August 3, and the Sir Walter Miler on August 8.
That's 9 races since June 22, compared to Hedengren's 3 races.
