Kiplimo is my first choice, half WR, couple more 'thons and he'll have it dialed in
Kejelcha is a grinder and rarely has a poor race
Whoever is ends up being there going to be their own person. Kipchoge wasn't just the fastest but has personality and an "aura" that helped make him a legend.
If by "heir apparent" you mean someone who dominates, winning almost every race, double Olympic gold medal winner, setting the WR -- there is nobody currently like that. Athletes like Kipchoge are the exception, not the rule. There's going to be several guys at the top but no one man will dominate the marathon.
Definitely not the fault of the guy who had been drinking and then drove too fast on a winding road late at night.
.....
He didn't live to tell his syde of the story. So no accident have ever been staged Mr. Einstein 🤓 Funny Man❓
There are a ton of staged accidents. But I’m not sure I know of any premeditated staged accidents except in movies where they’re pulling some kind of a heist.
Do know of a lot of accidents from people going to fast, driving at night, under the influence or some combination, and we might know Kiptum’s side if he hadn’t drank, slowed down and stayed the night. Not like he can’t (or couldn’t) afford a hotel.

Yeah because World Record Holders are known to be notorious alcoholics who don't take care of themselves....omg. Kevin Kiptum physical appearance showed no signs of over indulgence of alcohol.
Wasn't Samuel Wanjiru un-alived and that was staged as an accident and even included alcohol but was later found out to be a crime❓ In the last 20 years there has been AT LEAST 4 to 5 notable Kenyan runners murdered and noone thinks Kiptum could have been as well 😲

Wow, this conversation went south very quickly and never got back on track. Can we be better?
I don't know. I don't think we will ever see the dominance again by one individual. There's a good amount of guys capable of running under 2:03 consistently and to have it dialed in and win almost 100% of the marathons you race for over 10 years is a tall ask.
Somebody nobody has ever mentioned will set the record at Dubai or Rotterdam or some place, then never run anywhere near that time again. And we'll spend five years talking about it.
His name was Kelvin Kiptum but sadly he passed away. (Also some questions about his rise, we will never know) But he could of broken 2 this year.
Sawe and Kiplimo are the next most likely but likely won't have the long term dominance. It does seem like runners are willing to make the jump quicker from the track so the marathon looks promising in the future.
Marathons have what track doesn't - money due to mass participation and shoe money flowing in.
Kipchoge is on the level with MJ/Lebron, Tiger, Messi- the only undisputed GOATs out there. *MJ and Bron are disputable, but 99% would agree it's on or the other*
We will never get another. Not one that dominate and consistently dominate in a long, long time if ever.
The greats redefine the sport after they are gone. I do not see anyone on the mens or womens side unseating Kipchoge

You say that like we didn't almost enter the age of Kiptum. There will be another

Kiptum literally would've already unseated his peak if he were still alive. Whether he would've had the longevity we'll never know. But you and so many people ITT are talking like we'll never see this level of talent again when we already saw Kiptum's rise just a few years removed from Kipchoge's peak.
