Hey all,
As a relatively new runner I'm having trouble setting training paces and wondered if some of you more experienced runners could help. I've been using Daniel's book, but find that my abilities and intensity levels in various types of runs differ fairly significantly from the paces he prescribes.
I have a 19:xx 5-K time right now after a few months of training and am looking forward to dropping it. Daniels prescribes around 8 mm pace for my easy runs, which seems fine, but the 6:38 recommended tempo pace is hard for me to sustain for more than 3-4 miles. I struggle a lot on the tempo plus 12 second 6-mile runs and I'm guessing I'm significantly above my threshold by the end of these.
On the other hand, my reps pace is much faster (with relative ease) than he recommends. Today, for example, I did a 10x400 with 400 rest in 74s and felt crisp and smooth throughout, without sucking too much wind.
Wondered if these divergences are normal, and how I might adjust as a new runner to improve as quickly as possible. Should I keep pushing the longer tempos and wait for the effort level to drop, or should I drop that pace 15 secs or so? Should I slow down on the reps even though I feel at ease at that pace?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
