It was a metaphor for the "wall" that Roger Waters would sort of build between himself and the crowd at shows, or, more accurately, the wall he wanted to. He sort of cracked one show when a fan was getting on his nerves, and he leaned over the stage and spit right on him. That kind of set the tone for the idea.
In the movie, Pink is building a wall between himself and reality, and/or himself and his fans.
That's the quick and dirty version.

Somewhat. He builds a "wall" around himself to isolate himself. His cheating wife, his nagging mother, the loss of his father, stupid restrictive teachers all add another brick in the wall.
The Wall is one of the greatest albums ever recorded (PF's best much better than The Dark Side of the Moon). The Wall itself is a metaphor for the shield Pink (and Roger Waters) uses to isolate himself from everyone else.
Thanks...
Thanks... while on the subject of metaphors... what is "the horse with no name" that America sings about?
I think it's also used as a metaphor in the sense that the material parts of the world desyncitize us, causing us to feel more isolated an empty, filled more with the empty void of material possession brought on by Pink's fame and further away from the fulfillment of human contact.
