That full article is behind of SC paywall until tomorrow. If you haven't read our earlier feature on how Hoey rose to global stardom under Rinaldi, you can read that now.
Wow. They are both grown adults and I bet it was a well thought out decision. Hope that Rinaldi elaborates a bit on the board. Big season for his group, they all took a big step. If rinaldi perhaps lived in America it could have worked, who knows.
Can't say I agree with this one at all, as to me it fits in the pattern of churning through coaches without necessarily taking a look at bigger problems/accountability. It wasn't Rinaldi who made Josh go out in 49.29 at USAs, which was just over the edge of what he could handle. A 49.5-50.0 and I bet he's in Tokyo and the season flips to a success. It wasn't a fitness issue as he ran great in both the 1500 and 800 once in Europe. Will have to hear more, but on the surface I don't get this move.
Hoey has always seemed to struggle with doing to much in training, I get the feeling that he thought Rindali was holding him back. That combined with his disappointment with his 4th place finish at the trials probably led to the split. Seems unfortunate after such drastic improvement. I could be wrong though, could do much better if the rest of the article wasn’t paywalled.

Could have worked? It did work. He had one of the greatest turnarounds of any elite US runner I've ever followed. Hell he wasnt' even an elite US runner. Now he's #4 in the world.
Jonathan's got all of the details including what led to the split but it just comes down to this - Hoey is uncoachable. I have written an editorial stating that which will come out tomorrow.
His talent is big. His drive is amazing. He reminds me of Alan Webb. But recovey is one of the key things in the sport. Your body doesn't get stronger while you lift weights or faster while you are workinng out - it gets stronger as you recover.
Basically the thing that broke the came'ls back is Hoey didn't want to take any downtime after 2025. Crazy.

Dumb enough to give most LR posters a run for our money.
