I've always wanted to visit, I hear it's beautiful but some of the people are a little flaky. It seems like a whole 'nother country out there the way people talk about it.

that's like asking what's the united states like.
far too big
What's southern California like? LA and surrounding areas? Sand ieygo?
It depends where in California you go. Contrary to popular myth, we are not all surfers.
It is too hard to generalize about Californians: there are too many of us and we are too diverse. On the whole, California is a liberal state, but that isn't to say there aren't millions of conservatives (there are). Our state is great. We have it all: searing desert, 14k ft. mountains, pristine ocean, sandy beaches, bustling urban centers, total desolation, agriculture, art, history--we have it all. Also, California EAISLY has the best weather of any state in the union (except maybe Hawaii). Natural disasters are rare (except for maybe earthquakes) the sun is out often and winter temperatures are pretty moderate and mild (except for the most northern parts of the state and the mountains). We are a diverse state with a diverse environment. We are the nouveau riche of the nation. Our living costs here are rediculuously high. I don't care if I spelled anything wrong, cuase I am a laiiid bak califoriniane
swimming pools and movie stars
I've been to the LA area and I thought it was amazing. It's beautiful, the weather rocks, and there's plenty of stuff to do. However, it took us an hour to drive about 10miles on the freeway one night. Everywhere that I went the people were friendly, and I didn't really see any scary people, although I stayed in pretty normal looking places. Overall I'd say Southern Cal is a wonderful place to visit. Depending on the type of person you are, you might want to live there too. Unfortunately, a lot of people DO want to live there, so it is pretty crowded.
millions and millions of immigrantes
And great Mexican fast food!
Watch the OC & Laguna Beach because that is dead on what California is like.
The thing about the OC is that we (Southern Californians) think it's ridiculous. (Except for people from Orange County who hate it)The OC depicts a view of Newport Beach which is, for the most part, only a little accurate. I'm sure Newport is drama galore, and everyone is wealthy as all get out, but it really isn't like that. Further, Orange County is huge, and the majority of it is inland, smoggy, hot, and very urban middle-class. Also, it's all filmed in Manhattan, Hermosa, and Redondo Beaches, where life is only like that sometimes.
Got on board a westbound seven-forty-seven
Didn't think before deciding what to do
All that talk of opportunities
TV breaks and movies
Rang true, sure rang true
Seems it never rains in Southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But, girl, don't they warn ya
It pours, man, it pours
Out of work, I'm out of my head
Out of self-respect, I'm out of bread
I'm underloved, I'm underfed
I wanna go home
It never rains in California
But, girl, don't they warn ya
It pours, man, it pours
Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it
Had offers but don't know which one to take
Please, don't tell them how you found me
Don't tell them how you found me
Gimme a break, gimme a break
Seems it never rains in Southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But, girl, don't they warn ya
It pours, man, it pours
Here's a breakdown:
Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra: Awesome. Great for hiking, running, skiing, climbing. Incredibly beautiful with spectacular mountains..
Northern California: Big Trees and lots of Weed. Weirdos by the bushel.
San Francisco: A city with alot of character. A must see before the big one hits.
Santa Cruz: Surf, Toke, and Freak Out !!!
Big Sur: In my opinion one of the finest coastal drives anywhere..
LA and So. Cal: Who do You Know ? What can you do for Me ? Let me tell you how great I am !
Joshua Tree: Great climbing... Cool Place
Death Valley: Pretty damn wide open and interesting but damn hot at 130 degrees in the summer.
Lake Tahoe:... Beautiful
Yosemite:.. A must see. A place like no other.. Really busy in the summer....

man. never heard anyone put it quite like that, but you've probably got a point. sad... since i live there. whatever... it'll rebuild. again.
san diego
Don't forget Sacramento, a great place to live, in my opinion. Also, it is not far from SF and Tahoe (which are awesome!)
Very liberal, very odd. Millionaire conservatives in the same towns as non-English speaking illegal aliens.
Earthquakes and mudslides alongside the hippie-generation leftovers, pushy real estate sales types, working people stuck in the middle and self-important Hollywood life forms.
Well, imagine a place where you can go hiking in 10,000 ft. alpine mountains in the morning, go swimming at the beach in the afternoon, and go see a big movie premiere in Hollywood at night.
That's southern California. Beautiful weather and incredible, diverse beauty. Just stay away form the yucky cities, like downtown LA, Westminster, Compton, etc. But, you'd be amazed that you can find a waterfall shaded by giant ferns 2 miles from a freeway. Lots of things are hidden away from the masses who just flock to malls.

I like California. I go out there from time to time because the larger part of my wife's family is scattered about California.
It's a bit of a culture shock if you were born and raised in a small, rural, southern community like I was. Especially SoCal and the LA area. Jesus. Talk about feeling like a fish out of water. I was definetly intrigued. But it was the same kind of intrigue one has when driving past a bad accident on the highway. I think morbid curiosity may be a better term. California can have LA, Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. They were interesting to visit though.
Northern California was more my bag. Beautiful. And San Franciso was awesome -- my favorite city I've ever visited, next to New Orleans (pre-Katrina).
Here's another...believe it or not, this is just a few miles from interstate 210!
