Please do not talk about PED. She did not have a monopoly on that and plenty of world class runners have been busted since. Also, the Iowa State thread makes it sound like it’s an uncontrolled epidemic in the NCAA (no testing, current D1 runners saying they “know” who is taking it…)
They had a great talent identification system (for both women and men. probably more for women). The best athletes would be pushed to go in Olympic sports. They had great coaches and infrastructure. They trained hard. That was the result. 47.60.

Yeah, the PED use has been out of control everywhere for decades, not just East Germany. Hell, I remember when Valerie Briscoe suddenly became so big and thick that people literally gasped when she showed up for meets with her new body - but the media never said a word. Coached by one Bob Kersee of course. She didn’t get the 400 WR but she did get Oly gold…
