The article says Oxford does NOT accept students with lower grades if they are black:

"It is thought that colleges are more likely to accept pupils who fall short if they come from a poorer background or attended an under-performing school."

"Sixty-one per cent of black applicants already come from these areas, compared to 16 per cent of white applicants."

Accepting kids with lower test scores if they are from poorer, less educated areas = BAD! EVIL!

Accepting kids with lower test scores if their Daddy makes a donation to the school = THE NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS!

Non-sequitur + straw man. Nobody is promoting admission by nepotism either

Nah, both of these things are dumb. Whoever has shown to be most capable should get the spot.

Everyone knows that being poor is a huge advantage in life. Poor kids don't need any more advantages.

Exactly, I don’t think this is an argument between nepo baby and poor minority. This is an argument about letting in poor minorities with poor test scores just because they are minorities vs poor whites with better scores. Who benefits from this? Maybe the boomer who made the nepo comment who has never had to deal with any of this can explain?

Of course, no one PROMOTES nepotism/ pay to play behavior. But, everyone understands it happens a lot and there is a wink-wink nod-nod quite acceptance of the practice by many people who have benefited from this type of behavior who also happen to LOUDLY speak out against “affirmative action”. See Donald J Trump, Jared Kushner, George W Bush, and the Brojos as relevant examples.

There’s a ton of support behind legacy admissions.

I see that it was in the UK, but is race a protected class? Yes. Is rich / legacy a protected class? No.

And Democrats overwhelmingly support affirmative action and do so publicly. Republicans, especially rich ones, have a tacit / implicit support of legacy but don't say it out loud

Groups are discriminatory. That is the point. If you are an Asian who got rejected in favor or one or 1000 others who were accepted with lower scores because of their sex or race or religion, that is immoral.

Huge difference...Legacy admissions are open to all. Not based on race.
