She would have been running in the late 80s, and this would have been a national level time then. I guess it possible, not sure if any old New York track fans could verify

I think she meant 1500 like she stated at start of interview. Ran the 1500m.

Not a chance. Most non runners don't even know what's a good mile time. Had a JV teammate who I ran into about 5 years ago at a family gathering and he mentioned to some high school kids that he broke 4 in the mile in high school. I only remember him because he was one of the slowest kids on the team.

This clip shows you my problem with Citius. They rush out to publish something without looking it up or being accurate. If you listen to the clip, it sounds like she's saying 1500 for 4:49.
I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt she ran 4:49 fo the mile in HS. Wouldn't that make her one of the top in the country in HS? She graduated HS in 1987. Does anyone have TFN magazines lying around from 84, 85, 86 or 87?
Track and Field news doesn't appear to have full archives for the 1980s online or at least I couldn't find them.
I found this but didn't check out all of the links:
If she ran a 4:49 mile in 1987, she'd have been only a step behind two-time Kinney champ Erin Keough, who was also the first high school girl to break 10 in the 3200.
Yeah if you listen back, she mentions 1500m first and I think her mind just kinda stays there when she brings up the time. 4:49 1500m is about a 5:11-12 mile, so very good and much more believable

Unlikely.
Are you sure about that? I have Keough's best as 10:03.07. I think Mortenson was the first under 10:00 for 3200.
