Nuts. Is she that good, or was this world championship field not actually that competitive? She beat all but one American man.
Jane Maus seventh for top American. Grayson Murphy DNF.

The US men performed terribly.
1st place in women category and 1st and 3rd place in men category are current or former orienteers
She is very good, but I think she does mostly orienteering
She did some golden trail races years ago, but never returned. Second place Sara Alonso competes in this series.
She was 2nd behind Grayson Murphy at the World Championships in the “classic 14k” a few years ago.

The race is on YT and it's not really a mystery why the orienteers cleaned up - a significant amount of the course was (no-trail) bushwacking up/down/across tundra and/or on incredibly technical, steep and rough trails. The harsh footing was very disruptive and likely frustrating for those who rely heavily on typical running rhythm - I myself routinely run mountain trails here in CO but this course looked extraordinarily wicked.
The 'long course' (80k) is going to be an absolute bloodbath!

Add 3rd in women's, Naomi Lang. She is all over the Grampian Orienteers club website from since at least the W12 age group. So two-thirds the medalists are/were orienteers.
The WMTRC doesn't attract all the top trail runners yet, it's a relatively new championships, the first one was in Thailand 3 years ago when pretty much no big names went. This one had a few stars, the mens uphill had a strong field from what i saw. But it's still a good opportunity to win a world championship title if you aren't the very best in the world.

The average UTMB indexes of the top runners in these races are extremely strong, the difficult trails are just hurting the pure runners and giving an advantage to those with better technical skills. Tove is a freak and would be at the front of normal trail races if she actually ran them more.
The men's long trail race this year has the 2023 and 2024 UTMB winners along with the 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025 WSER winners. The women's long trail isn't as deep, but it has Katie Schide. I don't know how you could possibly assemble a better field less than a month after UTMB. This would have been a good Killian course, but he's off doing Killian things.
didnt a wasp attack affect some of the womens field too?
Go look at the 2022 fields. I'd never heard of any of them.
As for the short trail this year, same again. Long trail - I've not seen the line ups for it. Uphill men had 3 very strong guys.
Just because you haven't heard of them means absolutely nothing...says more about your knowledge or lack there of than anything.
In terms of past performances or elite performances in mountain events before they became long trail focused, the long trail champs didnt have guys who are champions or super elite in other top Mountain events beyond maybe jim and merrilas. The up and down event is loaded and the uphill was also super loaded with talented guys who regularly win major competitive events and have strong digs in track and road racing to boot. That itra score thing is biased as heck. I see guys winning against great comp in say a 20k and they give them 700 point. Then for a random ultra with 2 elite, the winner get 840 notation. They gotta check that equation and fix!!
