The Boston Marathon's qualifying system does a disservice to runners. They set a standard, which I think is a fine idea, but then make that standard flexible and depending on things beyond the runners control. Every 4-6 years they update the standards but it doesn't seem to take any of the uncertainty away. This past year they changed the standards but you still had to run over 4 minutes quicker than that standard to get it and wait many months (in many cases) to learn if that time would get you in. It adds a layer of uncertainty and anxiety in many runners lives.
Who decided the new standards? They should be fired because it year 1 there were still over 4 minutes off.
Would it not make more sense to have 3 ways to get in the Boston Marathon. A tougher standard that guarantees you entry. A set number of charity spots for runners who raise a specified amount for approved charities, and then based on those 2 numbers any remaining spots based on a lottery, where everyone knows its a complete change situation.
Instead the BAA uses a system that keeps the highest number of people in the dark and uncertain of their entry. It's unnecessary and even cruel to the running community which supports them.
