My high school PRs were 17:44 in cross country, 2:07 for the 800, and 56 for the 400. Most of my training back then was inconsistent—I was usually jogging 40–50 miles per week at 8–9 minutes per mile, since we were always playing catch-up from being out of shape.
My PRs from 2019–2020 are:
- 5K: 17:14 on August 1, 2020 (hilly road race, won by over a minute)
- Mile: 4:55 in January 2020 (unattached indoor meet)
- First breakthrough: 18:26 in October 2019 after starting that summer totally untrained, just jogging 1–2 miles at 8–9 minutes per mile
From December 2019 through April 2020, I trained consistently and ran a 17:25 solo 5K on the track. My issue was a “yo-yo” mileage pattern: I’d hold 40–50 mpw for several weeks, then jump to 60–70, which left me wiped out and dropping back down to 25–30 before bouncing back up again. After taking a week off in May, I ran 30–40 in June, then held 50–60 through July, which led into my August PR.
Unfortunately, there weren’t many races during that stretch, or I think I would have gone sub-17. I also didn’t do many structured workouts. I’d mostly hammer long runs when I felt good—many of 10+ miles under 7:00 pace, including one 13-miler at 6:30 average and another 15-miler at 6:45.
Things completely came off the rails in October when my son was born. I tried to come back in 2022 with similar training, but even more inconsistently. I think my bests that year were 18:15 for 5K and 4:57 for a road mile.
Now at 27, I feel like I’m leaving a lot on the table. I want to fully dedicate myself to running for the next five years, but I know I’ve been all over the place with training.
My last nine weeks have looked like this: 16.2, 20, 22, 24, 25, 24, 26, 30, and 12 so far this week. All runs have been at 8:30–9:30 pace. I’m also a bit heavy for running at 5’6”, weighing about 140–145.
At this stage, what kind of training plans would you suggest? I really want to learn as much as I can and improve on my PRs. I’ll be updating this thread every four weeks with my training from the previous month.
