Interesting! You’re right, there does seem to be something, although I don’t know that it’s all deserved.
He was the big upset at the Olympics, and interrupted who letsrun thought should win: Jakob. Jakob has been steadily improving for years, whereas by contrast Cole seemed to come from nowhere (which isn’t exactly true, but given his performance jump felt like it). Moreover, Cole is a sit and kick, which letsrun typically looks down on, whereas Jakob competes with the spirit of Pre, the original darling boy: with guts and a bit of arrogance.
Plus it’s easier in some ways to be happy for someone who got 3rd (oh, you just snuck in) rather than outright gold.
Then Cole isn’t as conventionally attractive—and at the very least could do more with his hair. He’d probably do better with folks if he cut it, but he did look pretty cool after the 5 k when he let it down. If he really wants to rock the long style I think he should braid it Viking-style prior to races.
He also didn’t take responsibility for the 1500 dq (or talk to media after) which doesn’t sit well with some folks, and he didn’t recognize that his 1500 tactics could use some updating. He could pull an Arop and add more arrows to his quiver, but the rail isn’t always there, and it adds to the distaste of how he “got lucky” in Paris.
For my part I think he’s a very entertaining athlete—it’s like with Golden State—no lead feels truly safe. And I like him more for pushing at the 3 k with Grant indoors, even if it may have cost him that win. And he’s done well despite GST! He seems to prioritize meets and training well.
