More Cabada Drama: Why was he not allowed to run NAIA Champs?

I think most college athletic organization's would draw the line on having an agent.

Who cares though, I love guys like this, brutal as hell.

I was surprised when he said he signed with an agent before nationals and then took the money from the 25k champs. The only thing I could think of is that the NAIA doesnot have these restrictions, but I guess they had to draw the line somewhere.

Wonder if his coach is upset with him for not being able to race nationals.

You are correct... accepting the money was perfectly legal. Raod races (other than the marathon) are considered to be cross country races and therefore someone winning money for such races are only subject to suspension in cross country. NAIA only strips eligibility in certain sports from athletes accepting money in that particular sport. A motion was brought on the table to change this rule in the indoor coaches' meeting in March to be further reaching in light of the Margaret Nakintu situation. Incedentally, Scott Simmons was vehemently opposed to such a rule change, citing the NAIA's accepting nature and open minded stance on this subject. Such a policy change would be a by-law change encompassing all NAIA sports so it was tabled until a later date.

Now what I found interesting when I read the NYRR interview with Cabada was that he had hired an agent to handle his ensuing contractual issues prior to his final national meet. As far as I know, the moment you sign an athletics agent, you automatically relinquish any eligibility you have remaining. Did Simmons not realize this rule? Did he not know Fernando was planning on hiring an agent? Did they just not care? He was declared in the 5 and 10 at nationals around the same time that interview came out which makes the whole situation seem kind of weird.

I was able to talk to Simmons and Fernando at Nationals this year. It was very wierd because he was DQ'd only a few hours before the 10,000m. From both of those guys he was cleared by the NAIA to run, regardless of having an agent, which is why we road tripped from ND to the meet, because the family cabada stayed with during his time in Minot wanted to see him run one last time.

Im going to assume something in the coaches meeting was said about it, and a bunch of coaches complained, and the NAIA reversed their decision because of complaints...sounds like peer pressure i think.

Fernando doesnt even have the money from what it sounded like. the race wasnt able to give it to him for another 3 weeks or so, so technically he wouldnt of even had any money until after nationals. Its all really fishy

Technically smechnicly he accepted the money (PERIOD). What kind of idiot really thinks he can go out, hire an agent, accept money from winning a proffesional sporting event and still compete at the ameture level. NO ONE! Not a single sport, D1, 2, 3, or NAIA will allow athletes to take money or high agents and still compete as ametures. Look Im glad Cabada is running well, well really I dont care if he is or isnt, thats not even the point. Not anymore, rule was changed this season. If you accept money in any sproting event that you are competing in you are done. Ie. Accept $100 for winning road race in summer then done for ever in track and cc.

no. it is still not a rule. the coaches voted that way, but it changes the entire naia bylaws, so it will take a little more than more than a witch-burning room of track coaches to change the entire association.

you right its not a rule yet but come next fall it will be which is the whole point. Im not saying thats what ruled Cabada out of competition, no he had plenty of other stuff that did that. It will be in place next fall. And btw withc-burning room of track coaches? What are you talking about? Amature athletes should not be allowed to accept money for running, period, thats not contreversial, never has been. The NAIA is a joke becuase its rules and enforcement are a joke, its good that these "witch burners" finally took a stand. There next stand should be banning morons like you from talking.

That's what I heard from a coach, it had to do with his signing with an agent.

The NAIA championships are over and done with. Who in the f*** cares about a shitty meet like that? People act as if it was that big of a deal to Cabada. He has bigger and better things ahead of him that the NAIA's like Reebox Grand Prix this weekend.

Cabada's going to train with Brad Hudson in Boulder later this summer. Looks like his career is shot :)
