The only wrestler in the country to be crowned a double Fargo National Champ this year as well as the 1st wrestler to do so representing Washington in 15 years looks to be equally talented in the running game as well 💪👏 INCREDIBLE. What makes it “dumb”? It’s a tad short but, I think, a fair course that’s all grass and forces a runner to deal with hills and some sharp turns. Seems like a better test than Woodbridge or a pseudo road race like Mt. SAC or Woodward Park.

I’m sure for a former Californian it’s a “fair” course. It’s closer to 3 miles than 5k. These kids will never approach these times in any other race until the Mook next year.
Absolutely incredible performance!!! Yes the course was short… most watches had it at 3.05 to 3.07, his was 3.0…. and honorable that he acknowledged this immediately. Nonetheless competing for the victory and taking 2nd against a very competitive field as a freshman deserves nothing but credit!

It flowed with the terrain of the golf course. If they moved the start to the parking lot or ran the first 400-800 on the road to get an accurate 5K would that make it better in your mind?

the title of the thread is what is dumb. The times in XC dont matter to begin with, but especially on a short course. The impressive thing is finishing 2nd in the race. That is what should have been in the title.
Let me explain. One of the great things, about that course, aside from the incredible golf course footing, is that it is very wide. I mean, in some spots it is VERY wide. My own runners also had ranges on their watches from 3.05-3.12.
From what I saw, my runners that were in huge packs, (think jv and slower varsity,) they had to run VERY wide on most of those turns. Their watches reflected this longer, more accurate distance. My faster runners and the ones who were in smaller groups that could hit those tight tangents, all had under 3.11 on their watches.
Take it for what it is worth. If they wheeled that course in the dead center of the course, it would have shown as a legit 5k. The reality is that there was a lot of time to be cut off, by running tangents.
Awesome answer💪 and I love the dramatic beef in the thread. Kid seems pretty dam fast and a good grappler. I’m not sure I’ve seen someone this accomplished as a freshman in these two sports before. Hopefully he continues his assault on both sports.
It is dumb because the only people who will think it is legit are the coaches who sent their teams there to run fast times and will have an over inflated self throughout the season. I used to say the same thing about Hole In the Wall but this is much much worse.
this freshman is obviously very very legit but that’s because of his overall finish. But im only slightly more impressed by this compared to the Olympia freshman. though I guess beating Mercer Islands top two is more impressive than getting out kicked by Mana Voss
As an Olympia freshman, (not the Olympia freshman of course - Quenton Lanese lol) we have hellafast kids - James Levitt is a sub 17:00 guy, and some of my friends who have NEVER run cross country before have run 18:25 and under at Fort Steilacoom.

Man, completely off base. Just going off the top runners and kids that ran it before, everyone runs faster later in the year. Case in point, Rodriguez 16:49 at Mook then 16:45 at Bellevue. Even went 16:48 at State. Ty Cirino went 14:43 at Mook then 14:35 at Rose City. There a site called MileSplit that you can research.. I've already found dozens that run faster on courses later in the year so am giving up here. And many care about times, it's how you rank teams. If Jesuit went 15:35-16:05 for top 5 that would have an impact on national ranking.
Rose city reference is comical….Mook and Rose City are significantly faster than most XC courses….sad thing is for the NW this year is that the NXR course is at the Polo Fields which is also flat fast and possibly short so it’ll probably be 14:20s to win NXR when if fact those guys are 15 flat guys on real XC courses. XC times should not dictate national rankings (course context and history is important when looking at XC times)
For every one example you have there are a dozen counter examples. Just look at 2024 PR lists in Washington last year on Athletic.net. All at these fake courses.
Im sure your kids ran great and Im sure they’re glad you’re online fighting to legitimize their times. Just don’t be surprised no one else is impressed.

It’s already been stated that they shortened the start by a significant margin this year compared to other years. An already short course got shorter. Looking at what happened in past years isn’t a help here.
People need to just stop trying to defending the distance. Even the kid and his coach recognized it’s short. WHO CARES? The kid is a phenom and I’m beyond pumped to see what he does this year and into the future. I followed him before and I’m now a fan. I’m a bit worried about the toll running close to 70 miles per week plus being a wrestler is gonna do for his progression through HS and beyond but I’m choosing to focus on the here and now and the here and now is exciting. The kid is clearly a baller. Save the time talk for track.
Yes! Absolutely incredible. I am more impressed by who he beat than what he ran. Imagine if Washington had freshman go 1-2 at the state 4A meet? Not an unlikely outcome!
