I’ve been coaching a few runners either personally or via email since I graduated from college three years ago. Most are coworkers or friends who asked me to help them lose weight or train to finish a 5K. Some have progressed to become fairly good local racers. It never once crossed my mind to charge any of these individuals.
A few weeks ago one of my coworkers asked me if I would train her daughter over the summer to prepare for cross country in the fall (the high school’s team has no summer conditioning program, and apparently the coach has little knowledge). I agreed, and she insisted on paying me. When I refused any type of payment she seemed offended that I wouldn’t accept any money. She has been hounding me for days now asking how much I want paid.
Am I wrong for not charging a fee for coaching? I would think that many of you also just coach because you know and enjoy the sport, not to make a profit.
