How many more global finals do we need to see without one or two of the top teams to know that this isn't working?
We want to see the best sprinters in the world in the final. We want to see Seville and Lyles get the stick side-by-side on the anchor and the stadium to be on its feet, roaring. We want to be standing on our couches at home, screaming at the TV.
This event is just too chaotic to have a one-shot-and-you're-out type of format. There either needs to be automatic advancing if enough guys from the same nation make the 100 final, or bring back the repochage rounds.
The guys are just running too fast and those little exchange zones are not scaled for men like they are for women and they just don't have enough time to practice together throughout the year.
Should they be able to make the handoffs? Sure. Is it worth having a totally anticlimactic end to the whole meet by making them prove it. I don't think it's worth it.
Just get the damn best guys on the track.
