True or false: Football players from around the area--and well outside boundaries--find a way to attend Folsom High.
(For those not in Sacramento area, Folsom is a public school with a very, very, very strong football program.)

I agree with you to a point. Private schools will always have an advantage over public schools in sports, especially team sports like football & basketball where money from booster clubs flow freely.

However, the CIF has pathways for talented individuals in sports like wrestling, XC, & T&F, where they can advance to state championships even if their team doesn't rank high in the league.

Lastly, I went to a private high school for 3 years, and transferred to my local public high school for my senior year. 40 years later I can tell you there's not much difference in the lives of those that graduated from public school compared to the private school kids. Those that have the motivation to succeed will find a way to succeed.

Public schools have tax dollars funding them.

They don't have to work for that money.

Private schools are funded by people who have to pay both tuition and taxes.

They sacrifice so that their children can get a better education.

Better get used to it. Pay to play is what conservatives support in education. You can read about it in the Project 2025 playbook, it's been known for years they were going to defund federal support then push for charter schools to replace public ones.

They believe public schools infringe on a corporations right to profit off education. That's it, that's their belief. It's insane and demented, because they want a working class of idiots.

USA was already struggling with education, but this will put it back decades compared to other countries.

Another way of saying it would be that conservatives recognize that the public school system is in shambles and that education--both academic and athletic--are better handles by for-profit enterprises.

They finally separated the public and private schools in TN in the 90's. Personally I think it's better to be separate. The basis for all sports is that everyone is playing by the same rules, and the private schools are using a completely different rule book.

Also, isn't the purpose of a private schooling experience to be separate from the public schools? Isn't that what you want? I dont think you should be allowed to sequester yourself away for somethings (going to school with black people) but then gladly participate in the fun stuff (sports: where you give scholarships to a few top level athletes).

People send their children to private schools in order to get a better education and a religious education. The parents would be happy to have any of the public school kids attend their schools.

Maybe public schools should hire real coaches instead of giving the job to the best hobby joggers on the teaching staff? That’s what most high schools do. Dangle a stipend in exchange for providing free after school care. In some districts, it’s mandated. You could have a former elite volunteer to coach and the administrators will take a pass to get some English teacher that jogs a little bit.

Don’t blame private schools for investing in and promoting sports.

My kids go to a private school. The private schools in our area are more organized than the public schools, participation in sports or other areas (band, chorus, theatre, etc.) are expected and the coaching is better. It really astounds me that a school our size (~500 total HS) routinely beats public schools with 2000-2500 students to pull from. They should crush us.

This is absolutely true. Central High School in Keller ISD Texas hired a woman with no coaching experience. She once ran a 34:00 minute plus 5K. She brought in a baseball coach and a soccer coach as her assistants. The baseball coach didn't know anything but was a great motivator. The soccer coach couldn't even get more than one soccer player to join Cross country. The Head coach was blessed with so many great athletes that I would get in trouble when they came for me for advice. I never once approached them because I was always afraid I would not be allowed to watch my son at track and cross country meets. She wouldn't even let me talk to him at meets. Amazing how many of the athletes still were able to get college scholarships.
