1906: The NFL has to get rid of that ridiculous new Passing Rule. Who ever heard of throwing a football? You RUN with the ball using your feet, hence the name FOOTball. It is not handball!

1943: The NFL has to get rid of that ridiculous new Helmet Rule. They are going to actually REQUIRE players to wear helmets?! "Sissy” football is bad for America, and bad for the NFL!

It does seem to be a reversal of the reasoning of prior rule changes, when they moved the kickoff spot up five yards and then later made touchbacks come to the 25 instead of the 20: these were implemented to have fewer injuries by essentially making kickoff returns vanishingly rare. For a few years you could see whole games without a single runback. Now the rules favor kicking it short of the end zone and encourage runbacks. I prefer more action to less, so I like that kickoff returns are finally a thing again, but I do recognize that the logic did a 180.

It is not even close to being as dangerous as the old kick off. Under the old scenario the kicking team was running with a full head of steam down the field. Now that they are lined up close to one another and cannot release until the ball is caught, the speeds are way down. Balls are also getting returned.

I would say adopt the rule in college...or just give teams the ball at the 25.

Allow the receiver of the kickoff to throw one forward pass to a teammate while he returns. Like we did in street touch football......makes a very exciting play with less big collisions.

Incomplete pass puts ball at where he threw it so there is some incentive to get up field a bit before he throws. Defense has to cover --- not just smash the returning player.

the kickoff is one of the parts of American football that got way too fancy and structured.

compare to soccer, where the kickoff is you just kick it to one of your own players and play begins. No need for a sideshow where there can be an onside kick, touchback, or it goes out of bounds. No need to send "special teams" on and off the field, the regular players do it.

It would simplify and improve the game to just have the team given possession start with the ball on the 20, without the kickoff.

They should do away with kicking altogether. It’s amazing how often a game is decided by a 150 pound soccer player.

Why does the NFL think that fans care about reducing injuries, anyway? Teams aren't putting their stars on the kickoff/return team anyway. Do they think Eagles fans are going to stop tuning in if Will Shipley gets concussed?

The whole push for injury reduction amounts to appeasing a customer preference that doesn't actually exist.
