This was a number of years ago but I see it's still on the internet. It's a confusing course so this was the best I could do to clarify the route.

Of the course or your map?
You should have chosen different colors for the map. Usually, when you are preparing a document with colors for publication, you want to run it through some color blindness filters to ensure the colors are distinguishable for most people. You used R/G which is the most common type of color blindness (~3% of people)

Of the map. I didn't create the course itself.
Sounds like to failed the ADA compliance test.
Why would a course like that need a map? Looks like you go a couple times around the perimeter of a series of fields.
I once ran there at a shorter course. Same exact deal, here's a bunch of fields, run around the perimeter.

I suppose it's because the first loop is different from the others.
It may have been that. There was nothing remarkable enough to remember one flat set of fields from another.
Is the "state hospital" a mental hospital? If so, I remember that.
Check out Penn State's course map. IMO it's a fail. I can't tell where to go starting after the 0.5 mile mark.
It’s fine. On race day, courses are easy enough to figure out. Never bothered me.

Yeah I got interested when I saw that address but it's not the psych ward I was thinking out. The original building is at Colonial Williamsburg and is still in use as part of the art museum. They have some rooms devoted to the history as a mental hospital.
When I saw Eastern State Hospital I was thinking the course started there and somehow weaved through the Colonial Williamsburg area. That would have been markedly more interesting. I was thinking maybe it takes advantage of that maze behind the Governor's Palace.
Quite deflating when I looked closer at the map and realized the name Eastern State Hospital has been transferred to a totally different building a long way away.
Great map, this is a lot better than the stuff I usually see. Congratulations!
OK you asked for it:
-why have scale bar in meters, and then show mile markers? Seems you would want consistent units.
-the aerial is quite old, 2010 or earlier, based on Google earth history & buildings shown.
-the scale bar is quite a bit off, it indicates ~25% greater distance than actual
I suppose for its purpose, it works okay..
