Doctors who speak poor English

I had the same thing recently, seemed to be a nice Nigerian fellow. Went in to discuss my ferritin level - low 25. He could barely speak english, didn't seem to know what he was talking about so I downloaded the NHS app and looked at the details myself. Reading the notes he inputted it was barely readable. He spelt fatigue as 'fatique', running and 'runin' long distance runner as 'long distant runner' and otherwise - 'otherwie'.
Quite concerning.

They have the job because they had better medical qualifications than the rest who applied. The choice here is between smarter immigrant doctors with poorer English and dumber white doctors with better English.

If you get an Asian doctor who emigrated to the west, it's almost certainly one who graduated top of their class. The others had to stay in Asia.

The UK’s problems are three fold: they don’t train enough (over a third are trained abroad), they don’t pay enough (better than some countries, worse than others) and there are better lifestyle options in other countries. A lot of UK doctors flee to Australia, New Zealand and the US for better pay and lifestyle opportunities. Who can blame them? The weather in the UK is crap, the pay isn’t great and the NHS is difficult to deal with.

I’d add that in the US, it’s hardly uncommon for doctors who are not native Spanish speakers but work in a Hispanic-dominated community to pick it up enough to be able to provide adequate care to patients who are more comfortable in Spanish. The doctor’s poor Spanish isn’t held against them because both parties know what is important and what is not.
