Some of you will say it is insensitive, but looking at the Pre results today I noticed this guy:
5 Elkanah Angwenyi Kenya 3:53.95
He is the only guy I have noticed in a long time from Kenya (not a Qatari defector) that doesn't have a very similar sounding name to tons of other Kenyans.
I know there is some reason for it, but it makes it hard to follow the progress of Kenyans when years ago we had ...
Paul Kipkoech (10k runner) ... then ...
Paul Koech (Steepler) ... then ...
Paul Koech (10k runner) ... then ...
Moses Kiptanui (great at everything) ... then ...
Moses Tanui (marathon)
Lagat ... then ...
Kiplagat
Chirchir ... then ...
Kipchirchir ...
Rono ... then ...
Kiprono
To be fair I would say that old-timers Julius Korir (steeple) and Samson Kimobwa (10k WR) had easily distinguishable names, and Ben and Richard Limo have as normal a name as you can get. But, by and large, the Kiprono/Kiplagat/Kipkoech/Kiptanui/Kipchirchir problem really makes following track almost a farce for me.
And don't get me started on the multiple Paul Koech, multiple Daniel Komen problem either.
