Must be the water?
Because once upon a time people actually wanted to live in LA. From 1952 to 1988 California was a reliable red state. It was the state’s golden era. People were hopeful. They saw promise and opportunity.
Palo Alto is Los Angeles?
Berkeley is in L.A.?
they took niche sports seriously before anyone else did. they loaded up on titles in sports like mens volleyball and water polo and tennis decades ago. USC has won 27 mens track titles and the won they split this year was their first since 1976. Just dominated the early days of the sport when few others cared to.

Must be Gavin Newsom? Are they tired of winning yet?
The weather and population to recruit from. With the exception of UCLA basketball and USC football, the California schools have mopped up in the other outdoor sports and especially the "country club" sports such as swimming, golf, tennis. California was producing soccer talent before the Pac 12 California schools got serious about it. The growth of indoor facilities has helped the Midwest attract and keep talent. The boom of SEC wealth, plus the lifestyle of smaller college towns has started to chip away on the west coast titles. Now in our NIL days, a college athlete in LA is competing with all the professional athletes for endorsement deals. In Tuscaloosa, etc., they are the only show in town.
1849 Nor Cal gold rush started California but now 2/3rds of the state and also the 4 schools are L.A. kids.
With tokenization the schools will soon vanish away as coaches start their own for-profit teams.

As another mentioned, LA doesn’t have water. They have to recycle urine from the Perrier and Pelegríno they have shipped in to drink to use for their showers. It’s why the nickname of the Golden state is still around even though they no longer allow mining for environmental reasons.
Pull out those VHS tapes and reels to see the big 3 sport National Titles because you sure haven't seen many in your lifetime. UCLA, definitely a blue blood basketball program. No doubt about it but 30 years and counting. USC was a monster football program, hasn't been the same since Pete Carroll left. Other than that a lot of Little tiny sports.
The top 4 ncaa champs schools don't care at all about NCAA champs. It's an afterthought. The Alumni, oligarchs, and Hollywood Trillionaries only care about Olympic Medals. USC, is #1 for Olympic Medals, Stanford #1, UCLA #3, Cal #4. The Four top Unis in the world.
