Mike helped so many kids be recognized at the state and national level. It will never be known just how big his impact was on so many kids but he can genuinely leave this world knowing that his contribution to society of young people was profound.
He truly cared about the sport of distance running and I put Mike up on a pedestal of those who made sure Illinois Distance running legacy and history remains what it is today.
His children though stricken with grief should take solace in knowing his impact on society was very positive and it’s hard not to acknowledge that someone who dedicates their life to empowering our youth is amongst the greatest people to exist.
RIP Mike I am sure you and Joe Newton have a lot to cover about the latest generation of Illinois runners
Really sad news. I don't think I've ever met someone else who cared so much about the sport. He is a truly a legend to anyone involved in the sport in Illinois and he will be missed greatly.
R.I.P. Mr. Newman

Truly, truly ... he was a media pioneer and warrior in local/state XC/track at the HS level. Also a big part of the York HS and North Central College legacies... ran for Newton and Al Carius, two of the coaching legends.
Rest in peace to a true legend. Can’t think of someone who did more for the IL HS scene.
Praying for his family, 63 is too young to go.
Very sad news. His unbridled enthusiasm for high school running was contagious. His quirky interviews and weekly videos were a special place for athletes to geek out and take pride in their hard work. He genuinely loved the sport of running, first as an athlete then as a new media journalist who tirelessly covered the sport. It's honestly hard to picture the Illinois state cross country meet without Mr. Newman posted up with this camera and doing audio coverage. Rest in peace, sir.
Mr Newman was always at every meet making every kid feel special, I remember I had a small triangular race which he traveled over a hour away to watch and cover. His interviews were so fun to watch and his enthusiasm is something that will never be forgotten. RIP
I guess there won’t be sub-5 or sub-6 mile challenge lists anymore.
