This will be a fascinating world championships competition with four reigning world champions making their outdoor season debuts in Tokyo after long injury layoffs:
- Jakob Ingebrigtsen - the reigning men's 5k champ hasn't competed since winning the 1500m-3k double at the world indoor championships in March. He's been dealing with an Achilles injury.
- Ryan Crouser - the reigning men's shot put champ competed in his World Shot Put Series in April, but that doesn't appear to have been an official World Athletics sanctioned event. His last official competition was the Brussels DL meet in September of last year. He's been sidelined with an elbow injury.
- Nina Kennedy - the reigning women's pole vault co-champion (with Katie Moon) was last seen vaulting at the Brussels DL meet last September. She's coming back from hamstring surgery.
- Yulimar Rojas - the reigning women's triple jump champ will be competing for the first time in two years. Her last competition was Pre in September, 2023. She's been recovering from Achilles surgery, which she had in April of last year.
How do you think these champions will do in their return to competition? Who has the best chance of defending their title?
