Yu Zidi, a 12-year-old Chinese athlete, has become the youngest swimmer in history to win a medal at the World Aquatics Championships.
China won bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Championships in Singapore, and while Yu did not swim in Thursday’s final, she qualified for a medal after swimming a leg in the heats earlier in the day.
She swam the first leg in a time of 1:59.28 as China qualified third fastest for the final. Australia went on to take gold, while the United States won silver.
Yu, who does not turn 13 until October, narrowly missed out on an individual medal on Monday after finishing fourth in the women’s 200m medley final, 0.06 seconds off Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey in the bronze medal posititon.
She was fourth again in the women’s 200m butterfly final on Thursday, 0.31 seconds behind Australia’s Elizabeth Dekkers in third.
