People act like Bobby Kersee is a legendary coach, but the truth is he’s just had the luxury of working with generational talents who were already elite before they ever trained with him.

Allyson Felix ran 22.18 in the 200m and won Olympic silver as a teenager before joining Kersee. Sydney McLaughlin made the Olympics at 16 and ran 52.23 in the 400m hurdles before ever stepping on his track. Sure, he helped polish some details, but these weren’t dramatic transformations—they were already world-class.

And when you look at someone like Athing Mu, who’s actually needed thoughtful development in the 800m, you see how much she’s regressed under his training. The guy’s resume looks impressive because he’s been handed freak athletes, not because he built them

Can I say it? She looks completely checked out. Like she’s going through the motions. I don’t see any frustration at all. Which of if I was her and had won everything I might fulfill my contract with minimum effort. Based on body language I would say it’s more her and less Bobby.

Your ignorance is ASTOUNDING and shows just how uninformed you are. I remember Kersee's succesful teams that HE developed back in the late 1970s at CSLA and then in the 1980s at UCLA. You morons commenting on Kersee are nothing more than youngsters, Johnny-come-latelies, to the big world of track and field.

Is it fair to say that Kersee's forte is more 100m through 400m hurdles? Physiologically the 800m is pretty different.

In another timeline, where Kersee would allow his athlete's to compete against each other and in the same disciplines, I wonder what Athing could have done in the 400m as her sole focus under Kersee?

He was a good coach back in the 80s. The times have changed.

look man, last i remember, at budapest worlds, Mu looked like she hated life. She was having a passive-aggressive pouting session on the track. then she claimed that she wanted to be instead a fashion model than a runner. ... then she ran olympic trials and wasn't even in good shape before that. then fell, and had the most horrendous protest with seemingly a mental breakdown after the fall.

she's going through a lot and i think her heart is not in running. maybe she only runs to pay bills or fulfills contractual obligations. maybe Kersee only coaches her because she pays well. ... He's obviously working wonders with Sydney.

I guess it's Bobby Kersee fault that Mu doesn't care about the sport and doesn't grind.

I think the strangest thing about all this is that you could take someone with a 50.xx 400m and a 4:03.xx 1500m and just train them like an English club 800m runner, and they would run somewhere in the 1:56.xx - 1:57.xx range.

I was nowhere near as quick over 400m and very slightly faster at 1500m and ran 1:57.5 as a very amateur club runner - albeit a hard training one - who in a season would do anything from 4x400m to 3000m s/c.

She says she's been injury free, so I'd love to know what type of training is taking that kind of talent, and producing a barely sub 2:00 effort (although my impression today that she hadn't killed herself - she looked less exhausted that some in front of her).

I'd pay money to know what her actual workouts consist of.

He appears to know nothing about tactics in the 800.

I might be wrong but the only time he’s coached the 800m previously is for JJK in the hep and the race is so spread out in the hep, race tactics don’t mean as much.

Welp, that's it. Athing Mu is out after failing to get out of the 2nd round. Even worse than last year when she fell in the final at OTs. Hell, at least she made the final.

She signed up at 10 pm the night before and lasted one round.

She just turned 23. And she could have been a back-to-back Olympic champ by now.
