Police have not given an official cause of death but from the steep course profile near the start, I'll bet she either fell off something or got a heart attack from trying to run too hard up a hill.
Elaine Stypula was a accomplished ultrarunner with a huge list of all 100 milers and longer you can think of, since 2009. Spartathlon, Badwater, UMTB, Big Horn and many others.
If someone was qualified to get to the Hardrock startline it would have been her. She passed away just 6 miles into the race. I am just a TV doctor but it was not because of running an ultra.

Final Destination teaches us that Death can get very creative if you attempt to cheat it's less gruesome methods? For Ryan Shay, could have been something as simple as tripping over a piece of garbage that Death blew her way in it's original design and the shock from landing on the ground could have triggered her heart attack.

They were performing CPR on her, so it was most likely a heart attack. Probably from a thickened heart wall from doing 100 mile races. Could have been a stroke, but that would likely be further along in a race when someone is more dehydrated. Hypothetically it could have been Commotio cordis if she fell hard on a hard rock at the exact wrong point in the heart cycle (highly unlikely, but it happens in sports and car accidents).
I wonder if the Air quality affected her. It was aqi of 152 to start.
Probably didn’t help. Could have been HAPE as well. Not sure how long she had been at altitude. Her law practice in Michigan was at 909’. Silverton is at 9,300’. The first six miles they are climbing about 4100 ft up to 13,416’, evidently in smoky conditions. That’s asking a lot from one’s body.
