I recently ran a 16:41 5k on the track. do you think i can break 17 in a 5k road race? How much slower do you estimate your typical local road race is than a track race?

Depends on you I think...some people race better and are much more even splitters on a big oval...some like to go with the flow of things and enjoy change in scenery and such.
do u guys have a record of times for when you ran a 5k at a track meet and then ran a local road race 5k within a few weeks (same fitness level)? Just trying to get an idea Thanks
16:34 track, 16:21 road. Road course was almost totally flat, 3 weeks after my track season ended (2 of those weeks no running). And it was a certified course.

Road is more like XC in most cases. Typically you can run faster on the track than you can on the roads. I am sure that you can break 17:00 on the roads, but the roads are different everytime, so it's really subjective. Most people have faster track Pr's than road.
I ran 14:37 on the track when I was 20 at the almighty Stanford Track. I ran 14:38 on the roads in SF,CA when I was 24 and in way better shape.
Every road race is different and if you treat it like XC, you'll be less disapointed with time ... worry more about who you finish around.
Track is track, road varies slightly. It varies depending on if you are running on asphalt all the time or sometimes concrete. Also it depends on if there are any hills. It also depends on how many turns it has and how big they are. It depends on how much straightways you got. Track is a little faster than a fast road course, maybe 10 seconds faster?
Most road races are pretty straight most of the way, so this may compensate for differences in terrain/hills, lack of splits, etc. So maybe 10-20 secs?
