This is a serious question. College football and NASCAR are the only things that get a large draw in the US (80,000 +). NASCAR gets a large following from mechanical/technical junkies and people waiting for car crashes. College football is huge because of the high energy level of play, the huge college student bodies having something to do, and the mass marketing branding the logo and loyalty to ones given school, amongst other things. Well, NASCAR seems to have the same things as college football in terms of reasons people go. I can understand the college football draw but still cannot quite grasp the NASCAR draw.
What do you feel is the main draw for soccer?
Is it the:
Action of the game
National/Regional pride playing out on the soccer field
A good place to get smashed and act foolish
Lack of mass participation in other sports, thus lack of interest in other sports
Heritage
The "if you build it they will come" idea that implies people will fill your stadium if you build it, regardless of size
The game is entertaining at times but can really drag on. What keeps the crowd into it and keeps them coming back in such large numbers?
This might be a tough question to answer and it might be just the opposite. I would really like to get honest opinions from those that are around it where it is big. There is a Nike soccer commerical that has been airing here of late that got me thinking about how in the heck this sport gets such a big draw.
Thanks
