A lot of people have been curious how USATF will pick its teams for World XC in 2026. Usually USATF picks its team at the USA XC champs in January but since World XC is in Tallahassee on January 10, 2026, that wasn't an option.
On Monday, USATF announced that it will be holding the "2025-26" USATF XC champs at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland on December 6 in conjunction with NXN.
Here's how it will work:
-Top 6 finishers from the men's and women's senior 10k races qualify for World XC
-Top 2 finishers from men's and women's 2k races qualify for the World XC mixed relay
-Top 4 finishers from men's and women's U20 races qualify for World XC
-NXN boys' and girls' winners will be offered a spot on the U20 team
-Foot Locker boys' and girls' winners will be offered a spot on the U20 team
I like this. USATF saves money by combining with a pre-existing event, but NXN is a great event and I expect them to do a good job with this. Plus the NXN kids get to stick around and watch the US champs afterwards? What a cool reward for them. And it should create a good cheering atmosphere for the races.
The tricky thing was always going to balance U20 qualification with NXN and Foot Lockers. I was assuming top high schoolers would have to choose between trying to make the World XC team or running NXN/FL but now looks like it is an option for both. I'm sure some college freshmen might view it as unfair that two spots are being reserved for HS athletes but I think this is a pretty good solution.
