Matt Scherer deffinately has some good range. I know all good 800m runners must have very good 400m speed, but Scherer not only has a good 400m PR, being on the edge of going sub 45, but he also has a good 200m time.
People sometimes talk about Wariner could do at 800m, but Scherer ran 1:50.25 in late March. I wonder what he could do in the 800m in the future if he trained for it?

I saw it all. Matt is such a beast! He's the man! The dude is just tough as hell and it's freakin amazing....it looks like he weighs b/t 190 and 200 lbs. That's a lot of beef moving. Damn, that dude is amazing!!!!
I understand that if he were to focus more on the 800m, his 200m and probably 400m times would probably suffer or not improve as much, but to have that kind of basic speed is a good start for an 800m runner. I bet he could probably be running 1:49/1:48 right now if the 800m were his event. Maybe it could be even better?

45.19 is LIGHT YEARS better than 1:48. Mercier calculator has it worth a 1:45.5. Scherer is getting into the territory where he's so good at the 400 that it makes little sense to ask why he isn't running the 800.

He isn't going to be moving up the the 800 anytime soon.
You could do a slight comparison to Jonathan Johnson, who is from the 400/800 mold. His open 400 pr is 45.9, along with numerous 44.xx relay splits. His 800 pr is 1:44.7. I don't know what Johnson could run for 200, but my guess is 21.low-mid. He's fast, and with 200/400 focused training could be faster, just as Scherer could be a very good 800 runner with focused training in that direction.
These are the types of guys needed to get the US back into the mix on the international 800 scene. Adam What-His-Name from Minnesota is another of those types that appears to be at least giving it a shot, realizing that the 800 may be his best shot at the Olympics/World Championships.
Unfortunately, as long as Johnson does not train his aerobic system, he will not move forward internationally. They will continue to suck off his fast pacing and abuse him in the last 150m of every race. At least with Johnson in the race, it's a near guarantee it will be fast.
Scherer should not move up. He is great at the 200 and 400. He is good at the 800. He should stick with what he is great at. I simply don't see him dropping a 1:43-1:44 even with training.
youre mostly likely right. he's need to drop some weight before he could get into good aerobic shape.
Saw him at the PAC 10 Championships--the guy looks like a runaway train. Awesome and a little frightening.
if anything he should work on that 200 time. i say he breaks 45 the moment he can run under 20.7...until then, that just aint enough speed to crack it. (but ive been wrong before)

Matt Scherer is very impressive but to the poster stated that his 400 is improving so need to run the 800m. There were plenty guys in the past and recent years with 43 and 44 second speed that ran the 800m. 45 is very fast but its not like it automatically rules out moving up in distance.

all of those individuals ran at least 45.0 in the 400m but they specialized in the 800m. Not knocking Matt Scherer because he is a amazing runner- just correcting the individual who assumed the 800m is out due to his 400 pb.

I thought the reason he is training with OTC was to focus more on the 800? I seem to recall an article in the Register-Guard or somewhere that mentioned he had a job lined up after graduation but elected to train with OTC to try the 800.
where has Joaquin Chapa been this year? I read on this site that he was using his 5th year eligibility to run at Oregon.
Chapa just enrolled at Oregon. He is supposed to be running the 5k unattached this Friday. I don't think he has jumped through all the eligibility hoops yet. He could run this spring for the Ducks, but it would seem more likely he'd wait and run xc and track next year.
I wonder how much Scherer weighs. From his interview on flocasts, he looks like he must weight around 180 lbs. He just looks big for an 800m runner, his upper body at least. I couldn't see his lower body from the view of the camera. I guess he is persuing the 800m full-fledged now. Good for him. He deffinately has the speed for it.
this is off of a lower calf injury, and 6 weeks of hard pool running, he will be only running mostly 800m's, and running only 4x400's when he runs 400m's. he will come into his own at 800m this summer
