Becuase GST is only having 1 race at the long distance discipline they also cut the prize purse in half for that event only.

So $50k to win one track race. It's tough to think of any other race that makes more. Only a few marathons really.
I was bracing to read a torrent of abuse towards Nico...
lol
The athletes kinda did it to themselves. When Grant didn't go with the leaders at all in the first 3k, because he had the $100k in the bag, it became very apparent that changes needed to be made (if it wasn't already obvious from the 14 min. 5k a few days before).
I like the 3 and the 5k when they're run honestly, but when you see them jogged and then hear the competitors just talk about money afterwards, it make the sport feel weird.
They did it to themselves. Stop jogging 3/4 of a race if you're being paid that much.
Maybe Grant can run 1500/3k double?
F*** that. I've been a huge GST supporter until now. It's new, it's experimental, it's changing the game. This is the first thing they've done that I genuinely hate. I might cancel my LA tickets and ask for a refund if they are going to screw the distance athletes like that. I don't care about the sprints or the hurdles. Fun to watch, but I'm not buying a ticket to see them. I'm buying a ticket to watch distance races. If they need to condense it, fine - but paying the distance athletes less sucks so much.
Wonder if this means they'll do a 5k in LA, or if it will be 3k only from now on.
Michael Johnson is clueless. If he really thought a bunch of long-distance runners were going to go all-out from the gun twice in 3 days, multiple times, just to be more entertaining, he obviously has no idea.
Should have foreseen what would happen, instead of later acting all disappointed and making the athletes seem like bad guys who "did it to themselves".
There should be time bonus incentives. Like in nascar you get money for leading at a certain lap and then scaled bonuses for how fast the finishing time.

Its more prize money than diamond league. Though, it might be theoretically possible to double there. More prize money than a third place finish at the New York marathon. Distance runners usually earn more in appearance fees than prize purses though.
Aint no party like an MJ party

This, I could get behind. If they're going to drop the 5k, add points towards the Slam title and Cash in the form of in-race checkpoints. First lap, 1500, 2600, and finish. Everybody wins because the racers with smaller chances of winning the Slam will likely lead the pack out faster and go for the mid-race sprint bonuses as they fight for 5th-8th place.
Where does it say they cut the prize to $50k? I haven’t seen that anywhere.
Literally in the article on the homepage

Kyle Merber did not do the job well. He is supposed to advise Johnson on long distance.
I assume this theoretically makes it impossible for a long distance athlete to ever win the bonus 100k for getting the most points for the entire grand slam series with half the opportunities as other event groups.
Can't see the top long distance guys committing to this next year.

That's a long race, but $1,000 per K! Not Bad!

What should he have done?
Picked different distance events?
Put max time limits for the events or the money is cut back (13:30 or something for the 5K).
The distance double was pretty weak and it was the same jog every time. Sure the final few laps were different, but it’s a lot of air time at a pace I could run.
Maybe a 1500/5000 would be better but I still think we’d get the sit and kick races. We still probably will with 1 event, but then we only have to sit through 1 race.
They should cut the flat races for the hurdlers too.
