Nuguse is great! No doubt about that!
But the best thing, in my opinion, was that we saw him really, really fight for it. Especially in the 1500.
The knock on Nuguse (by some people around here) is that he always seems so happy and "fine with it" when he gets second. He's always smiling and happy with the outcome as long as he "did his best."
That is a healthy and good way to live your life, but fans of sport want to see some dog in the fight now and then.
In the 1500, thanks to the unusually close camera angles, you could see him gnashing his teeth and getting the crazy eyes. I love to see that fierceness in him.

I thought he was cooked with 70 to go, but he actually held on just fine. 1.3s behind Marco is better, and it might dip under 1s in Philly though Marco will be fresh…

That’s the only positive thing in Grand Slam. Seeing 1500m guys running competitive 800m. I actually watched the race.

I probably could have worded it better but it means that he ran with confidence in both 1500s. Not afraid to set the pace, not afraid to cover moves, always being up front jockeying for position, kicking like an absolute savage in the homestretch with intent to win.
Yared 2-3 years ago would coast in 3rd-4th and get pulled to fast times and not really put himself in contention to win. Now he races with intent to win - it's just that today, Josh Kerr had a better kick, and last time, Wanyonyi had a better kick.
Ever since that 3:43 mile in 2023, and certainly ever since his Olympic Bronze medal, he has run with a lot more confidence and courage than his early 20s self, which is just awesome to see.

1:44 high is pretty good, but not so long ago a top 1500 runner was almost expected to be able to run 1:43

Forty plus years ago... the best 1500 runners were 1:41 and 1:42 guys .. heck even the best 5k runner - the Oly and World Champ and 3k/5k WR holder - was a 1:43 guy and medaled in the Olympic 800....so not exactly spectacular here.
I agree a that was a better showing by the big 3 1500 guys that places their PRs within a reasonable expected range....but I was surprised to see the 22.19 hs soph was the third of the three .. I dont believe the other two can ever run a 22.2 FAT 200.
I also liked the race within a race where the 8 guys ran ftw and the 15 guys waged their own war.
Big surprise of the meet was Arop going 3:35 in the 15...

Hate to break it to all the Kerr/Hocker/Yuguse fanatics, but those three guys just got their butts handed to them in that 800 meters.
Not sure why that performance is supposed to be so encouraging, yet if JI were to have run the same thing he’d be wildly mocked as having no speed and compared to Sebastian Coe
