We all know he would have destroyed the field in the 3000/5000m. Where would he place in the 800m? I think he would have been around Hoppel and ahead of Gourley honestly. He prepares well for races and does well in heat.
He may beat Fisher, but “destroy” him in the 3000/5000? No, things have changed. He’s not destroying Fisher, he’s going to have to work for it.
Every indicator shows that he would have destroyed the field. A few quick time trials indoors doesn't change that.
You think the 3000 at Millrose was a time trial? C’mon that’s not a reasonable assessment of that race. That’s a race that Jakob noticed without a doubt.

Jakob ran almost 6 seconds faster in worse conditions similar to today. The difference is light and day.

We will book mark and return to this after the Tokyo 5000. You are underestimating and disrespecting Fisher. Jakob is of course the favorite, but Fisher has leveled up and you are missing it.

Fisher played it safe today because he wanted to lock the 100k down and not risk burning up hunting down Gebrhiwet. Fair enough, I'd probably do the same in his shoes.
Jakob would have still gone and got the win because he KNOWS he is levels above the rest. He enjoys toying with the field - see all of his euro races and any race against geb, kejelcha et al.
That's the difference between the two. Fisher is better than the field but not by enough that he is confident enough to take unnecessary risks. Jakob KNOWS he is so much better than the rest that he can get away with silly tactics and still win.

I think you are underestimating and disrespecting Jakob. He destroyed Fisher in Silesia, finishing 30 seconds ahead of him. Nobody holds a candle to him over 3000m-5000m unless he is sick or doubling back. Even then, he may still win but just by less.

Fisher is a great runner and I dont fault him for just getting 3rd in the 3000m, but I cant picture Ingebrigsten going for anything but 1st place in that 3000m given the same scenario
So much Fisher hate or Jakob worship on this thread. Jakob is clearly the prohibitive favorite in any race 3000-5000 meters, and maybe this dispute has to with the definition of “destroy,” but I will continue to assert that Fisher has a punchers chance of beating Jakob at 5000 m. Fisher is very strong with a 10000 pr of 26:33 and he is now a much stronger and better runner than he was when he set this mark. I certainly don’t think Jakob is a prohibitive favorite over Grant at 10000. Fisher also is sneaky fast off fast paces. He outkicked the Olympic 1500 champion at 3000 m off a 7:22 pace. His kick off slow paces was evident at GST. Fisher has clearly leveled up from double bronze last summer. Fisher is an outstanding tactical racer unlike many of the Ethiopians. Jakob is 95% going to win in Tokyo, but he’s not going to destroy Grant this year. Jakob is going to have to run a decent race to beat him.

I agree. I've said many times that Jakob is head and shoulders over everyone else in a championship 5k, but I think Grant will put up a decent showing this year and at least make Jakob hurt. But he's not beating him. I would put a lot on Grant getting silver, as long as Aregawi isn't in the race.
I don't know if those heavily criticizing the performances ever ran track competitively.
Watching that meet gave me a distinct memory of running windy, early season outdoor races in the middle of the day on crap tracks. I'd struggle running 3:56 in the 1500 only to run in the low 3:40s a month later.
Some of it was getting into better shape, but running in the windy daytime on a substandard track was a a huge part of it (that also impacts the mental component - there is nothing more deflating that struggling to hit splits far off your goal pace).
